Own modem and router

Hi, I would like to use my own modem and router for xfinity internet. I had xfinity previously in the past and used netgear c3700v2. Howver, I noticed that netgear c3700v2 is no longer on the compatability list for 200, 400, 800 mbps. Can i still use the netgear c3700v2 for xfinity internet?

It's not recommended as the device is no longer approved. When it was approved it was only for use with plan speeds "Up to 287 Mbps". It's always best to use a device that is currently approved for use with the Internet plan speed of your choice, perhaps even a bit faster to accommodate Comcast's periodic "free" speed upgrades. See https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices.

You can try and see what happens but you probably won't be able to get it activated for service for any speed tier being that they no longer support it. YMMV. Good luck !

I have 3 locations.  I'm using an older unsupported one than that on a 400Mbps plan at one of them.  It will do roughly 135Mbps connecting to an unthrottled server.  At that location, I don't care.  There will never be anything at that location or enough devices that can use the aggregated bandwidth at the same time, that was just the plan when they hooked it up.

Does it make sense to me to buy equipment that can?  Naaa.  It's not worth it if they obsolete equipment every 5 years, and the next move is switching providers/technology if the monthly cost changes, or if they refuse to provision it at all rather than invest in more DOCSIS.   Security is done by other means so I don't care if they ever update the firmware on it or not.  For me, it doesn't matter.

You might care though.  Unsupported also means no security updates for known exploits, not that firmware patches are done timely, or even regularly on these things in the first place, so you'll want to handle security with something else if you are using it.
