Outdoor WiFi

Are the xFinity pods ok to use outdoors? I suspect the answer is ‘no’. If they are not, is there an outdoor access point you’d recommend that is compatible with my xFinity WiFi? I have several devices in my backyard and would like to get a clearer/stronger signal to them.

Hello, @user_qv6hks! Thanks for taking the time to visit our Xfinity Community Forum, and for posting this question about using our WiFi Boost Pods outdoors. Great question! And our team is awesome to work with because we'll always do our best to give you the latest, most accurate information available. In short, no - our WiFi Boost Pods are not designed for outdoor use. They're intended for indoor use only, and exposure to outdoor elements like rain, snow, and/or extreme temperatures can damage them.

To extend WiFi coverage to an outdoor area, you might consider these options:

- Placing a pod in an inside wall outlet closest to the desired outdoor area. This can help boost the signal to reach your outdoor space.
- Using a dedicated outdoor access point (AP). These devices are specifically designed for outdoor use and are more weather-resistant.
For the best performance and to avoid damage, keep your Xfinity WiFi Boost Pods indoors.

And as far as an outdoor access point, that is totally up to you! I recommend researching reviews and ratings online (we're limited on recommending third-party devices). And let me know if this helps! We appreciate your loyalty, and remain here to support you and your household however we can :)

@XfinitySara,

thank you for this info. I understand that you are not able to recommend third-party devices, but could you possibly let me know what capabilities I need to look for when finding a unit I could use outdoors that would work with my Xfinity WiFi system? I don’t want to buy one that would be incompatible.

Sure, @user_qv6hks! I'll do my best :) While we don't officially endorse third-party devices, here's what to look for in an outdoor WiFi extender that might work with your Xfinity system:

1. Compatibility with your Xfinity Gateway:
- Check your Gateway Model: Find the model number on your Xfinity Gateway.
- Research Extender Compatibility: Look for extenders specifically designed to work with your Gateway model. Some extenders might list compatible router brands or may have broader compatibility.

2. Key Features:
- Dual-Band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz): This provides flexibility for different devices and better performance.
- Strong External Antennas: Essential for outdoor use to maximize signal strength and reach.
- Weatherproofing: Look for an IP rating (like IP65 or higher) indicating resistance to water and dust. This is crucial for outdoor placement.
- Easy Setup: Choose an extender with a user-friendly setup process, ideally through a mobile app.
- Ethernet Port (Optional): If available, this can provide a wired connection to a device like a security camera.

3. Placement Considerations:
- Line-of-Sight: Ideally, place the extender where it has a clear line of sight to your Xfinity Gateway.
- Power Source: Ensure you have a reliable power source for the extender outdoors.

Important Notes:

- No Guarantee of Compatibility: Even with the right features, there's no guarantee that a third-party extender will work perfectly with your Xfinity system.

I recommend researching and comparing different outdoor WiFi extenders based on the features mentioned above and reading customer reviews before making a purchase. I hope this helps!
