On Gig Plan but getting max only ~500Mbps to 700Mbps on speedtest.net on ethernet cat6 cable connected Windows 10 PC

Hi,

Gateway: XB8

Device: Windows 10 PC connected to gateway

Cable: cat6

Adapter: Onboard Intel gigabit adapter with last available drivers (it is a 2013 era PC)

Adapter speed setting: 1Gbps Duplex

I saw a other posts regarding this issue and also went through the post at https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/internet/answered-troubleshooting-gigabit-internet-speeds/602da9cdc5375f08cd3e8557 but am unable to see speeds close to 1000Mbps on my wired connection to my Windows 10 PC which has a 1Gbps connection on the motherboard. The highest I have ever seen is around 700Mbps. I tried out all the ethernet ports on the XB8 gateway with multiple cat6 cables but get the same results. I am subscribed to the Gig Plan (1000Mbps when I signed up but I think it is now boosted to 1100Mbps) for a while.

When my phone connects to the gateway with WiFi 6E, I do see speeds at 1000Mbps, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the gateway. However, I hope others who has been in the same boat before and have figured out how to get close to 1Gbps speeds on the wired PC can post what else I need to check out that is not mentioned in the article above.

As mentioned, I have tried all the ports on XB8 and have swapped out different cat6 cables too, without improvement. Unfortunately, I do not have another wired computer to see if the issue is only restricted to my computer. However, I know the onboard ethernet has 1Gbps capability and is set to Duplex mode.

Hope some of you Comcast experts and expert Users can help.

Thanks!

Your phone has WiFi 6e, so it must not be too old.  Your PC is almost a teenager.  What are the specs on your 12yo PC and what kind of phone are you using?  What CPU?  How much RAM?  I bet your phone is faster than your PC.  Your phone getting full speed proves there is nothing wrong with the service to your home, so it must be something inside.  You've tried a bunch of cables, so that leaves the XB8 and your PC.

Thanks for your reply zandor60657!

My PC has an Intel i7 3770K CPU, 16GB RAM, Discrete graphics card, SSD on (6Gbps SATA 3 port) as boot drive. The motherboard has onboard Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet controller.

PC runs without hiccups or any noticeable slowdown. I am not sure it should limit Gigabit ethernet download speed. If anyone is sure this is not true, please let me know.

The only other thing I can think of is whether there is any setting related to the ethernet controller on my motherboard or the ethernet ports on XB8 that could cause this behavior.

Old gaming rig?  An i7-3770K should be able to keep up with gigabit.  That's as fast as you can get from that generation without getting into socket 2011 or Xeon systems, and they're only faster in multithread.  Should be fine unless something is slowing it down.  Just have to ask when someone has a 13yo machine.  Getting 700 on a test or two could just be the other end, but if you've done a several downloads and tried multiple speed test sites it's probably something going on with that machine.  It's unlikely to be a problem with the XB8 when your phone is getting 1000 over WiFi.

Hmm... one thing that can do that is security software.  I had a work issued i7 laptop with a 10th gen CPU (i7-10xxx... forget the exact model) that couldn't manage more than 500Mbps because of company security software.  Got anything like that running?  Antivirus package?  Corporate security software?

Agreed. Check for VPN software, ad blocking software or extensions, firewall, antivirus, anything. Also, you didn’t mention which browser. Try Firefox or Edge, if you’re currently using Chrome, and see whether it makes a difference. Also double check to ensure that Windows and all drivers are fully updated. You might want to go to the PC manufacturer’s website to check to see whether it has any updates that Windows update did not. Port 4 (bottom right, with the red line beside it), is the 2.5Gbe port on the XB8. Connect to that one if you want to get the full speed of the XB8. But, realistically, if your PC has a 1Gbe NIC, you’re going to max out 920-930 Gbps in the best circumstances, due to overhead.

Try to run the speed test with no other programs running.

 Good luck

Thanks zandor60657 & user_323c89.

I don't use VPN. I had turned off my Norton anti virus and firewall and get the same results. Most of my speedtests range from 300Mbps to 700Mbps (with 700Mbps being very rare). I also tried the speedtest on different browsers and get the same results. I also tried different servers, again with similar results. I never see anywhere near 1Gbps speed on my PC.

I also hoped that the 2.5Gbe port would make a difference, but it didn't.

Unless it is with some obscure settings on the PC ethernet adapter or the gateway itself, I don't know what else to try.

Good evening vbonline thanks so much for sparking such an interesting discussion here on the Forums!  Are we running into any signal strength or noise issues on the wired PC?

EG,

I DM'ed as requested but it looks like all the settings on my gateway are OK. I am trying to see if I can locate a cat6a cable (low confidence whether it will make a difference compared to the multiple cat 6 cables I tried) or a different pcie ethernet card to try. Other than that, I see no other options left.

Before this, I had also tried different DNS servers than Comcast's but got the same results. I am unable to edit my original post, so I am referring to it here.
