Novice with new modem and ancient router

I tried to replace my Netgear C6900 today with a new Arris SB8200 modem.  I want to use my ancient Netgear WNDR3700v3 router that I've had since as long as I can remember.  I got the modem set up, but the router was not cooperating.  I called in for help and was told the router was not recognized.  I was also asked how old it is.  Why would the age of my router matter?  It's a gigabit router and has worked in conjunction with my Netgear C6900.

I've always had a combo modem/router but have learned these things have a short life span.  So, I want to replace the modem first, then at some point, get a brand new spiffy router.

Does Comcast have to activate a router?  I was under the impression that they need to activate only the modem.

Have you power cycled the modem since connecting it to the router? Whenever you change the device directly connected to a straight cable modem like the SB8200, you need to reboot the modem before if will communicate with the new device.

Correct. They don't control stand-alone routers.

@BruceW Thank you for the reply.  I did not do that and the tech person I spoke with did not mention that.

There is nothing I need to do with the router?  Does the router need to be "activated" by Comcast?

Nope! Just give it the correct WAN configuration (usually "Auto" or "DHCP") so it picks up a public IP, and you should be off and running.

Thanks, @BruceW.  I'll work on it this afternoon and see how I do.

All done.  Everything seems to be working as it should.  Thanks again for the help.
