New XB7 modem hot to the touch
I upgraded my modem yesterday, a painful experience because the app process didn't work, and it is a [Edited: "Language"] rage-filled nightmare getting any live person on the phone from Comcast these days. Anyway, it is running hot to the touch. I used chat last night to "talk" to a tech, but I was told "sometimes it gets warm" and "it's still updating" (7 hours after the install), but this morning it's still hot. Is anyone else experiencing this? If it's normal, fine. If it's not normal, I'll have to get it replaced. But I do not want to have to go through another install with the least custom-friendly company on earth unless it's necessary. Thanks for any input. @xb7

Thank you for the swift reply, and your offer to help. I will send you a private message. FYI, Xfinity has made it nearly impossible to reach a live person through its 800#. When the app failed, the only option I was given on the app was to schedule an in home appt. When I called the 800#, the only option was to send an automatic refresh to a modem that wasn't connected, and then respond to a text, after 10 minutes, that I wanted a call. This was after me screaming AGENT AGENT into the phone, with absolutely no result. It was insane.

@rlhmass Thank you for reaching out to us here on forums. I am sorry to hear it was challenging to get in contact with us. You can always reach out to us on here, Facebook, Twitter or by calling us at 1(800)Comcast. I don't ever want you to feel like you can't reach us! While it is normal for it to get warm sometimes, it shouldn't be hot to the touch. I would like to look into this further for you.
Please send me a private message and include your first and last so I can assist you. To send me a Private Message, please click my name “ComcastAbbie” and click “Send a message”

Please post any results you get to this. I had the same issue when I installed mine last October, and posted an almost identical message. I got no response. I feel your pain with the 800 number.
Anyway, in October, my gateway ran at 120 F. for about a week, then cooled down to what I would call "warm" (I didn't measure it). I could understand it running hot while it was doing whatever it had to do to get registered and/or configured, but not for several days. I have since set it in "Bridge Mode" and use my own WiFi/Router. I just measured it again and it is 102 F. Warm, but certainly not "Hot".

Thank you for responding! Over the last 4 hours, 2 different reps have responded via private messages, providing no info, just asking me questions and an offer to replace the modem, if I would like. While I appreciate the offer, and it might come to that, at this point I just want a simple answer to a simple question: is it normal for the XB7 to run hot? Can't seem to get that answer. I would hate to order a replacement, go back into the install hellscape, and then it be the same thing. My blood pressure can't take it.
I used a meet thermometer to measure the temp, and it was 120, also. I'm enouraged by your experience that it has cooled down. I plan to try again with the tech team during the week, as maybe the "A" team will be on duty (it's Sunday).

I just got another private message from a tech, asking me about the temperature at the exhaust fan. What exhaust fan? Does yours have an exhaust fan? Mine is completely silent.

Totally silent.
Manual says about the top panel "Air vents for product ventilation are also present." That's where one would expect them to be.

Good luck.
By waiting, you might luck into same results as I did. I wouldn't hold my breath on "the A team" though. The "manual" that you can find on the Internet does not list any real temperature specs. It asks for 2-3 inches space around the thing, don't put it in the sun, and don't use it in a room over 104 F. At only 120 F on the outside, I don't think there is any serious risk of a meltdown though 😀.

Thanks for confirming. And thanks for the tip about the manual, I found it online. The tech asked me about the "exhaust fan," but to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he meant "exhaust vents."

I had the same issue and after some research realized that the air comes in from the bottom and then is expelled through the top via a weak fan. My problem was the modem was on carpet so no air was able to get in from the bottom to circulate. I put the modem on a small coaster tile and now it is running much cooler. I hope that helps.
