New IP assigned and bad geolocation

What the heck, I have talked to 6 reps at Xfinity and posted elsewhere, why not here? You never know. The following was sent to Xfinity but covers the issues +

 

No reflection on anyone in particular at this moment but during the pandemic I have had to deal with numerous customer service reps - some with Xfinity and some with others. It is not enough to say thanks for being a loyal customer nor thanks for your patience, but MUCH more important to learn to say "I don't know" rather than guess and likely guess wrong. I have known more than 90% of those I have talked to. It is frustrating.

 

Now, after that preamble 🙂

 

Thursday the Internet went down at 1:59 AM. TV was fine. So either past the splitter or an error in the CO. At 7:00 I spent quite some time with a really nice tech rep who swore it was my (customer owned) Gateway (easy excuse) when I knew it was not. But lacking any other choice, I decided to go buy a new gateway.

 

5 minutes later the Internet came back 🙂

 

I assume my provisioning at your router at your switch was bad and I now had a new IP address. As you hopefully know, this does not change - the assigned IP from your switch to my gateway on the WLAN.

 

The problem is, the geolocation of this new IP is different everywhere depending on what site including Google is trying to determine my location! On some I am in Palo Alto correctly. Many more in Vacaville and the pizza joint there will not deliver to me 🙂 And, in MANY more KANSAS as the IP address only shows US, CST and it chooses Kansas. Really Bad. ipdata.co shows this when you check my ip: 98.x3.xx3.xx. IP2Location.com shows Palo Alto properly. I cannot find who is picking up Vacaville.

 

I need this fixed!!!

 

By the way, returning to rant mode for just a minute, Carla last night told me all gateways come with an IP address and only the gateway manufacturer can change it 🙂 Antonio, bless him said it gets changed in windows and who was the manufacturer of my computer??????? Obviously no idea the difference between LAN and WLAN.

 

Sorry but frustrated. I'm not in Kansas anymore 🙂 Nor have I ever been.

 

Antonio was Tier 2...

Thanks for the reply. Would be nice if someone at Xfinity understood and offered to fix it. Gets more frustrating with each rep I speak with.

Thanks. Already have donw 3 of them.And agree. But it is the ISP that provides the geolocation ifo for those thrid parties to retrieve.

If your gateway device has a MAC address cloning feature, you can try cloning a different MAC address in to it. This will force their DHCP server to assign a new / different public IP address to your connection, but be advised that the new address may be from the same block and still suffer from the same incorrect geolocation data.

You likely recently received a new / different WAN (public) IP address assignment to your connection from their DHCP server / IP address pool, and the rDNS / geolocation data that is associated with it is now incorrect for you as it previously belonged to someone else that lived in that area. Comcast shuffles blocks of IP addresses around the country all the time. ISP's don't correct this. A third party service does. Unfortunately, this is typically a *back-burner* thing to get corrected. The only thing that you can do is to report it. You can try this;

Wait for the geolocation provider to approve your request. If your request is approved, the amount of time it takes to see the correction varies by provider. The average is a month or more.

OK, gets odd that some browsers properly pick up my location and some do not. So each browser might use a different API for geolocation. On the ones that find me in Kansas I downloaded an addon that allows you to spoof your location. In my case, instead of spoofing I use it corecct to the proper location. The disadvantage of this is that as a laptop, I have to turn this off when I travel and use a different IP address and back on when home near my router. So a kludge, but a workaround.

Just an update:

 

Today started showing as th eoffice in the next town where the servers for my Intenet are located in Google. Close enough. When I check other IP geolocaters, some have me in New Jersey, some in Kansas, Some in Menlo Park California. SO maybe it is propagating, At least Google and Bing, etc are picking it up properly now. Perhaps over time all will.

@Rebop2015 I have the same today (well last few days) I am in COnbut my IP if out of MA ffs…I get weather from MA etc / why I bother paying for this service is because I have no other options, gig/unlimited choked by bad config and yes 100% on the techs - they are more interested in complementing you than actually fixing the problem by sending signals to the modem …. Come on now let’s progress to some form of tech support that is actually worth it.
