Need to disabled 5ghz for setting up smart home devices

Many of our WiFi light switches require my phone to be connected to the WiFi via 2.4ghz connection. In the past I could temporarily disable the 5ghz to force my phone to connect via 2.4ghz. Now Comcast prevents us from having full control over the wireless router/modem.

I need to set up more new WiFi devices but now I cant. Do I need to replace this router with my own now?

You could use your own equipment or just split up your 2 wireless networks, to allow your devices to connect.

The two WiFi bands have recently been combined into one with the Comcast gateway devices. Some devices get confused and don't know how to see / talk to combined bands.

If you are not using any Xfi Pods, you can try separating the 2.4 and the 5.0 bands and give them two different broadcast names / SSID's;

Associate the devices with the 2.4 band's SSID (broadcast name) and password.
