Need internet to install internet?!?!

Hello.

Recently, I set up an xFi Advanced Gateway (XB8), but it wasn't so easy.

Oh, don't get me wrong: Performing installation using a mobile app should be easy.

However, what if you are installing a wifi gateway in a location without an internet connection?

Seems silly, correct? That is, if I am in a location with an internet connection, why would I be installing a device that provides an internet connection?...

I have an idea. Just in case someone wants to install a wifi gateway in a location that does not have a connection to the internet, provide instructions on how to do that.

In theory, if you just hook up to the line, and the line is active, if you open up the admin interface at  http://10.0.0.1 or any other web site, instead of the the admin interface, or the web site you entered, you should hit a redirect to a login page to register it.  A captive portal situation.  That would be your Xfinity username and password for the account you created to order service.

That's the way it went with a 3rd party gateway anyway, however replacing it after a lightning strike physically cooked the first one, it didn't work.  I had to call them and provide the CM MAC and MAC address of the new hardware.  They had to remove the previous device and reset the account to get the new one to register 'captive portal style'.  Then the captive portal worked and it provisioned.  I can't remember if you need the serial number or not, but write it down in case you need it, or read it off the gateway sticker.

If the line is not active, or it's a new install, you'll need a tech to install it, and they'll get the gateway provisioned at that time.

From a phone app, and existing active line, you'd use cell data instead of an internet connection to manage the account.  Now remember, if you didn't want to administer it from a phone/device app, you picked the wrong product to install.  That's just the way the Xfinity gear is going.  Local admin interface is now limited crippleware on their rental stuff.

Maybe this has changed now, but it used to work this way.  I haven't switched gateways for a while.
