Need 2.4

Hi

I just got some minisplits installed and they are wifi enabled.  Sadly, they don't work with 5ghz, and I don't see any 2.4ghz network from my Xfinity router.  Some googling shows that there was once a time when I could turn 2.4 on, but no longer.  Is there any way to get a 2.4 ghz network going?  Thanks!

If you are not using any Xfi Pods, you can try separating the 2.4 and the 5.0 bands and give them two different broadcast names / SSID's;

Hello @user_f93d8c, thank you for reaching out to us for assistance with your networks. We understand how important it is to keep your home connected, and we're here to help! Typically, your Gateway will detect and automatically connect using the optimal channel to provide the best WiFi signal at any given time. This selection is based on several factors, including the number of other devices currently using a particular channel, the distance from the device to the Gateway, and/or if the device is capable of connecting using 5 GHz. However, we understand there may be instances in which you want to specify the channel used for 2.4 and/or 5 GHz.

If you follow this link: Change the WiFi Channel in Xfinity xFi - Xfinity Support we have a helpful how-to on the steps you can take to separate the networks and have them operate independently. Also, special thanks to @EG for sharing another helpful link. If you run into any problems the community is here to help!

@XfinityRyanE So, simply put (for us technologically limited), if I have an XB7, then “I” can’t change the setting, and have to hope that it “automatically” finds the 2.4 network, so I can add the smart outlet?

  • 2nd Generation and newer xFi Gateway (XB6 and XB7): Most of these Gateways have been upgraded with software that manages advanced WiFi settings automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible. Advanced WiFi settings for Gateways with this software enhancement are not visible and cannotbe managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity xFi.

Thank you for your comment. You can still manage the two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and their network name/password independently provided you do not have xFi Pods. The advanced settings that are disabled are things like the channel and channel width. The gateway automatically manages those settings to help keep interference down.

That doesn’t appear to be true for me. I too need a 2.4 GHz network and I’m currently stuck with a device that can’t find it. Specifically it wants my phone to find it and then tell it what it is, but the phone can do 5 GHz so it’s not finding anything else. Support chat talked me through three methods of trying to do this and all three of them refused to let me change the SSID or anything else about the 2.4 GHz network. Yes I have one of the newer Xfi’s.  When we looked at the settings the 2.4 was set to the same SSID which makes no sense, and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t change it. I’m about ready to plug a firewall appliance into the back of the XFi, turn off the XFi Wi-Fi and use the firewall which, like any other wifi router or AP I’ve ever used, lets me control both bands. Is this really supposed to be benefiting me?  Never mind, that part was a rhetorical question.

Actual question:  how can I change the SSID or the password of the 2.4 GHz network using one of the newer Xfi’s? Whether I am directly logged into it through the web, using myxfi my webpage, or the app, these settings are grayed out.

Hi there, @Lekmo. We offer the ability to split the SSID's, so you can see the 2.4 GHz and the 4 GHz networks at the same time; However, there are some restrictions, such as having xFi pods or using one of our newer gateways. The options will be hidden if any of the restrictions are in place. You can find out more on the restrictions here

I no longer work for Comcast.

Quite welcome Ryan ! FWIW, the two articles are basically the same thing with different titles.

Thanks, with your info, I think the smart outlet is now connected to the 2.4 network. However, although the wifi is connected and the device is located about 10 feet from the modem, it still doesn’t “scan.” Any thoughts?

Is this the only device that you are having issues over WiFi? If so, I would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer as they are going to have more specialized troubleshooting for that device. Beyond helping you get it connected to the WiFi, we have very limited tools to troubleshoot individual devices.

Thank you; you might well be right that it’s the Gosund outlet itself, because I later tried a smart plug from Amazon and had no trouble setting it up.
