myQ 8883

Having trouble getting data through XB8 router over TCP/8883 to MyQ-EA3 LiftMaster garage door opener.

I believe I've port-forwarded 8883 correctly.

I can tell that MyQ is connected via wifi over 2.4Ghz.

When I review the logs on the XB8 I see that the router it blocking access to MyQ-EA3 for many different IP4 addresses over the last couple of days.  The source IPs look legit based upon ARIN registrations. The detailed error messages are "Threat" 'Attempt from IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in' and "IP reputations".

I have security set to "high" on the router.  Everything is blocked - except for TCP/8883 to the specific device on DCHP.

Is is possible Xfinity is blocking certain ports even though I have told the router to open them?

Any ideas (besides 'reboot router'again) would be helpful.

Thank you.

Greetings, @user_ml8bc3! I hope your week has been treating you well. Thanks so much for taking a moment out of your busy day to leave a post on our community forum about this port forwarding issue. You have definitely come to the right place for assistance.

Can you tell me a little more about the history of this device? Was this the original configuration of your MyQ-EA3, or was the port forwarding setup put in place to resolve another issue? Was the device initially working when you first installed it?

Thank you for taking an interest in this case and sharing with others.

History - Everything is brand new! New house, new garage door opener, new cable to the house, new router.

The configuration for the MyQ-EA3 is right out of the box as far as I know.  I'm able to communicate with the device via Bluetooth.  I can tell that it has a wifi connection (2.4Ghz only) because I see the connection in the router.

I've customized the XB8 just a little bit.  I set the security level to "high".  I have two xFi pods hardwired to the router.  These are at the far side of the house, and the XB8 is right near the garage so I don't think the pods come into play at all. The connection information in the router supports this theory.  Finally, I added the port-forwarding for TCP/8883 after the default MyQ-EA3 set up didn't work.

When I look at the Advanced Security - Blocked threats screen, the only entries that show up are related to the MyQ-EA3 device.  I assumed this was related to port 8883, but upon closer inspection I know realize that port 8883 is never specifically mentioned.  The only information is the source IP and my device name.

I've seen other support conversations that say open utp/tcp 53, but I'm not going to do that for security reasons.

I will try to remove the Advanced Security features within the router to see if that makes a difference.  Tomorrow, I will set the security level to 'low' to see what happens.  While I'm not excited about opening everything up, I don't have have much on the network yet so now is the time to try it.

I'm also going to try to reset the garage door open by removing the battery.  I will also look at the WPA setting. I know the MyQ device doesn't like WPA3, but changing it (and saving the settings) on the router is often harder than it sounds.

Thank you!

It sounds very likely that our Advanced Security feature may be the cause. It's designed to protect your network, but sometimes it can be a bit overzealous and block legitimate IoT device traffic. It's great that you've already identified this as a possibility and have a plan to test it. @user_ml8bc3 Let us know how it goes.

I removed Advanced Security from the router, set the security level to "low" and rebooted the XB8.  Voila, I was able to complete the MyQ-EA3 installation.  I tested the MyQ app from my iPhone and was able to raise and lower the garage door.  I changed my security level to "medium" and everything still worked!

user_ml8bc3 Awesome, that is great to hear, and I am glad you reset the security back up to the higher level after.

Updates - Today I increased the security level to High and things started failing again. While not completely starting over, I did step back in a few places and took notes:

Security level=low, Port forward=null, Advance Security=Off --> Garage door=successful; video=successful

Security level=medium, Port forward=null, Advance Security=Off --> Garage door= successful; video=successful

Security level=high, Port forward=null, Advance Security=Off --> Garage door=successful; video=failure

Security level=high, Port forward=tcp/8883, Advance Security=Off --> Garage door=successful(?); video=failure

Security level=medium, Port forward=tcp/8883, Advance Security=On --> Garage door=successful video=success

A couple of these settings don't make sense, but for now, I'm going to keep the highest settings that appear to work.
