my printer, a HP 6500a, wont connect to wifi.

so im having an issue where my printer will not connect to my wifi.

i used to have it on the network via a cat5 cable, but after moving it, its no longer possible. no problems, it has wifi.

so before, i had the xb7 modem, id push the button, the blue light would blink, the printer would say error connecting and thats it.. it wont try again.

so i call and talk to someone in tech and i got talked into getting the xb8.. its so much better they said.. faster and everything..

i get home, connect the xb8 and it is fast, seems to quieter too, cant hear the fan inside.

but check it out, my printer still wont connect..

so i go into the settings and i print the wifi report and it says this.

No Filtering --------- FAIL

this means my MAC address of my printer is being blocked by your modem/router.. :(

i cant find any setting in the awesomely put together android companion app to turn it off.

please tell me how to get my printer to work..

It has an 802.11 b/g/n radio in it.  Your Xb8 is WiFi 6.  You got a couple of options.

1. USB or Ethernet

2. WiFi Direct -- connect with the printer internal radio directly:  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06584212.pdf  (range is limited, but might work for you).

3. You can try to change radio modes on your XB8 -- enable 2.4G and 5G WiFi modes:  https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/change-wifi-mode-admin-tool-xfinity-xfi  (Try the phone app.  Some say the option doesn't show up anymore)

4. Buy a cheap 802.11 b/g/n access point.  Connect it to the Ethernet port on your gateway.  Some are Power over Ethernet.  Make sure it comes with a power adapter.

I have the exact same problem; but I do not understand your answer at all. I have HP officejet 4630 which worked perfectly with my old modem.  I am in the add Wi-Fi Client on the gateway itself but it seems a little too easy to be true.

When I try pair from the printer it times out so if I try from the gateway itself with that help?

Thanks in advance

@preinsko Xfinity does not manage your printer.

You can connect to your specific HP 4630 printer directly, without Xfinity, directly to the printer, with a feature called "Wireless direct".  See page 87: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03909822.pdf  Install the latest software and drivers first.

Here is also a bit more on wireless standards:  https://www.lifewire.com/wireless-standards-802-11a-802-11b-g-n-and-802-11ac-816553

Your printer uses 802.11 b/g/n for a WiFi Standard.  Xfinity XB8 is using 802.11 ac/ax by default.  They are not speaking the same standard.  You might be able to change that by changing what Xfinity calls "WiFi modes":   https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/change-wifi-mode-admin-tool-xfinity-xfi .  Your WiFi devices and gateway have to speak the same standard to communicate with each other.  You'll have to do that with the phone app now as they crippled the gateway local administration page.

Some folks are reporting that being able to change "WiFi modes" is now crippled too with Xfinity gear.  I don't know if it is or not on your specific gateway and firmware.  In the future, it's always good to look at the WiFi standard the device uses before you buy it/deploy it.  Also, if they can't publish a manual for it, or you have to control it with a phone app -- the least secure device you own -- you don't want it.

I'm never keen on changing factory defaults of any hardware. My old modem was an ARRIS TG1682 I still have the user guide, so I checked, and it provided 802.11a/b/g/n/ac connectivity. This modem worked perfectly with HP Smart and all my devices including the printer purchased in 2014.

So, it looks like I need a newer printer; but it seems all the HP printers use Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n,

I can't find any that support 802.11 ac/ax exclusively.

However, the ones that do list connectivity 802.11a/b/g/n say they are HP Smart app capable. Would this be satisfactory, or do I have to find a printer that actually states it supports 802.11 ac/ax? Do you supply a list of printers that are compatible with XB8?

Also is there some manual or user guide for the XFinity phone app, it seems rather limited in scope; but I've seen references to configuring the modem so there must be something I'm missing with the menu choices.

Thanks in advance

@preinsko Well that's the question right?

Xfinity makes some claims about being able to "Change WiFi Modes".  Even enable 802.11 b (old 2.4G), however in practice, you find out either the app can't do it, the firmware can't do it, or your configuration stored off-site won't download correctly.  What's their solution?  Exchange it for another persons problem -- nobody on earth could afford to swap out hardware for a database issue, so they're recycled between problems.

Do they publish a manual for it?  Or their firmware loads that break stuff with a change log?  Nope.

Advice?  Keep the printer.  Ditch the Xfinity hardware.  Make sure you can log in and administer the gateway/router/modem locally, and not with a phone app.

Ditching the Xfinity hardware is not an option.

A new printer that has up to date technology is the acceptable solution for me.

You didn't answer my question are printers that use wireless 802.11a/b/g/n compatible with the XB8 gateway? I went online with HP and found a few suitable printers. I then chatted with a HP technician and the printer that I decided to buy is compatible with XB8.

You can close out this ticket.

Thanks for your help I learned a lot and appreciate it.

This was not an acceptable solution.. also, you didnt open the ticket.. so why are you saying to close it.

also your printer the HP 4630 has wifi N.. there should be ZERO issues with you connecting it to the XB8..

i really wish i could use my printer.

so far nothing i do can make my printer connect to the wifi on the XB8.. its being blocked by the MAC address.

the only solution would be to buy a new router and connect it to the XB8 in access point mode and have 2 wifi networks one just for the printer.

it seems like they have done this on purpose just to make their devices you have to rent worse than their competition.
