My own cable modem

I did some research and I bought a Netgear Nighthawk Cm1200 to replace Xfinitys modem, I can't afford them monthly rental costs.

My question is, do I just install the Netgear modem like Xfinitys modem... Do I need to contact Xfinity before install?

I want to make sure I'm getting the most up/down speeds as possible.

Cheers.

Connect it to the coax line and power it up. Let it fully sync up with the system, and check that the front / top panel indicator light(s) are steadily lit.

Then connect a computer to it and open up a browser. You *may* see their *Walled Garden* modem self registration page. If so, follow the screen prompts. Have your mobile telephone number, your Xfinity username and password, or the account number and telephone number associated with your Comcast account handy.

If not, try calling 1-855-652-3446. That is their device activation line.

If that doesn't work for you, you can call 1-800-comcast and tell a rep that you would like to have a new modem provisioned for service. Have the RF / CM / HFC MAC address and the serial number of it handy when you call.

There is also the option of using their Xfinity App for activating modems;

@EG thanks for all of that info. I will try it and let you know how it goes.

I'll test my speeds before and after and see if there's any difference.

@EG ok, so I finally got a chance to set up this modem.

All lights on the cable modem are one, as per set-up instructions.

So I was using the Xfinity app to set up the modem and it`s telling me that the modem does`nt have wifi?

Do I need to get a wifi router as well to get my broadband up and going???

I thought this was all I needed???

Now the Xfinity app is saying it can`t receive a signal from my modem.....

Ignore that message, it's bogus. Call that self-activation number or that 1-800 number.

@EG I`m talking to a xfinity agent and he`s saying that the Netgear modem does`nt broadcast a wireless signal and it has to have a standalone router.

Updates: So upon further research, it turns out that I do need a router in order for thr Netgear modem to work. Grrrr

More money, I don't want to spend..

Would the TP Link Deco X20 solve the problem, I've read that mesh networking is the way to go??
