My Helium miner is blocked by Xfinity

Hello I had my Bobcatminer running for 3 months with no issues and now Xfinity keeps blocking traffic to my device when I approved port forwarding for Port  44158,  firmware updates, ports 22 and 443 open Outbound.

My bobcatminer is relayed all traffic to my miner is blocked stating malicious ip attempts to access my device... I approved these port forwarding to my bobcatminer for can you please stop blocking my device from recieving packets thank you.

Here's the solution that worked for me when my device fell into Relayed status (despite having 44158 open):

  • Delete any port forwards you have for your Helium device in the xFi app "Advanced Settings"
  • Unplug Helium device
  • Open xFi app, click on the "Connect" icon at the bottom
  • Scroll down to the "Not Connected" devices and find your Helium device (it might take a couple of minutes after unplugging for device to get demoted to the "Not Connected" list, be patient)
  • Click your grayed out Helium device, then click Forget Device
  • Restart your Xfinity Gateway (this might not be necessary, but it can't hurt)
  • After gateway is back up, plug your Helium device back in
  • Give it a few minutes to show up in your xFi app as a Connected device again
  • Return to Advanced Settings and forward TCP port 44158 to your Helium device
  • That's it

I am playing around with leaving Advanced Security ON, although I see it is blocking occasionally "known malicious IP" addresses from China, Romania, etc. I'm not sure if that is valid Helium traffic being blocked, so I'll keep an eye on it. But the device does work with the Xfinity gateway-- it's just that something changed (some kind of Xfinity update?) and to get your device to work again, you basically need the gateway to Forget it and re-add it.

@mjboh3 Tyvm for the tip. I have done the same thing, I am no longer relayed but my Bobcatminer hasn't earned anything in 4 day's, but I think the helium network is having a problem.  If it's not one thing it's another. Best wishes on your mining.

Update: Advanced Security blocked a dozen "known malicious IPs" over the last 24 hours. I did some lookups and found that even my own Xfinity-assigned IP address shows up in the supposed "registries" of malicious IPs. Additionally, of the 6 IPs I spot checked, 4 of them had Port 44158 open, so maybe that means Helium activity? Feels like Advanced Security will not play nice with Helium traffic-- (unrelated to the Relay/Port Forward issue.)

@mjboh3 Is this what the port forwarding looks like when complete?

Xfinity supports the use of external modems/wifi routers. I recommend purchasing your own modem (NetGear CM1000

) and separate Wifi router. This SHOULD allow you full administrative control over more advanced functions like port forwarding.

Has anyone found a solution for blocked “threats” without completely disabling Advanced Security for the rest of the network?

Hello and thanks for reaching out @user_f205d9. It has been a couple of days. Are you still having issues, or have you got this resolved?

I no longer work for Comcast.

How did you solve that problem? I just set up my bobcat miner and am having the same issue where my xfinity moden is blocking my miner transactions because it thinks they are malicious threats.

I have Comcast as my internet provider. I have created a static address and have set up a port forward to port number 44158. I verified that the port is open. The Xfinity app does not allow me to select TCP (it’s not an option in the drop down). I have selected FTP-21. Do you think this is my issue. Can I select TCP in another area? It has remained in relay for 10 days. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

@user_fcf485 try the website it worked for me. Where did you check miner status? Helium explorer is sometimes not updated frequently.

Hi- I did check on Helium Explorer and it continues to show “relayed”. I was incorrect when I stated that the Xfinity App didn’t allow TCP protocol. I have the port forward set 44158 with TCP protocol. The Port Checker website showed FTP-21.

If this relay doesn’t resolve in week (2), I will delete the port toward and start the process again.

Hi, I finally received my Bobcat Miner and followed the steps to forward prot 44158 and disable advanced security but it still not come out of relay mode.  Has anyone found a solution to this issue?  I have an Xfinity router.
