Motorola MG8702

I have a new, still in the box Motorola MG8702. I bought it because my consumer research, and the Motorola product datasheet both say it's compatible with the Xfinity Gigabit plan, "Certified by Comcast Xfinity and other Internet Service Providers. Supports their fastest available cable modem services."

Unfortunately, Xfinity tried unsuccessfully to provision it and only acheived between 200 to 300Mbps and then threw in the towel saying it isn't compatible.

Question: Do you have one successfully operating on Xfinity's Megabit plan?

... MG8702 ... the Motorola product datasheet both say it's compatible with the Xfinity Gigabit plan ...

It was at one time, but ever since Comcast changed the speed for Gigabit from 1000 to 1200 Mbps they appear to require compatible devices to have an Ethernet port capable of line speeds of at least 2500 Mbps. The MG8702 does not seem to have one and is not rated for use with Gigabit service. https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices says the device is approved for use with plan speeds "up to 945 Mbps".

Using devices on Internet speed tiers for which Comcast has not approved them tends to produce unexpected results, often speeds well below the manufacturer's ratings. You should upgrade the device, or choose a lower plan speed for which the device is approved.

@BruceW But... but... but...

Comcast certified the MG8702. This data sheet was release in 2020. Has the speed tier changed since? (I should know. Everytime they "congratulate" me my speed degrades.)

(No. That's not my motoboat impersonation.)

I don't recall the timing. Internet posts seem to suggest that the 1.0 Gb tier was bumped up to 1.2 late in 2020 or early in 2021, probably depending on location. Modems lacking 2.5 Gb ports were demoted at about that time.

AFAIK Comcast has never explained any of these changes. The MG8702 appears to be similar to Comcast's rental XB7 gateway (see https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/broadband-gateways-userguides) except for not having telephone ports. Both devices claim to handle Internet speed tiers above 1 Gbps, and both have 4 Ethernet ports. The MG8702 ports are rated at 1.0 Gbps (the actual throughput is about 940 Mbps when Ethernet overhead is taken into account), while one of the XB7 ports is rated at 2.5 Gbps.

I don't understand why they didn't just "add" the 1.2 Gb tier while continuing to provide 1.0 Gb service for those who had devices not capable of the higher speed. Instead the change they made rendered heaven-knows-how-many user-owned devices instantly obsolete with no warning.
