Motorola MB8611 modem keeps restarting - firmware issue

I have owned my own Motorola MB8611 cable modem since September 2022, and since the middle of December 2022 it has been restarting multiple times per day. After a lot of troubleshooting, I figured out that it is related to the firmware, aka software. With Firmware 8611-19.2.20 it is stable, but then Xfinity updates it to 8611-21.3.7. The update causes it to reset, disrupting my internet service for a few minutes. Then the modem restarts a few times within an hour, disrupting the internet service every time. After two restarts, the firmware reverts to 8611-19.2.20, and my internet service works until Xfinity detects that the firmware needs to be updated (usually a few hours). The firmware gets updated to 8611-21.3.7, and the resetting process repeats on and on. I tried resetting the modem by pressing the reset button, and this doesn't stop this problem from happening.

Based on what I've read in this forum, this is a VERY COMMON issue.

Can you help me, and everyone else with this modem, solve this issue so our internet is stable again? Is it an issue with Xfinity or an issue with Motorola? I have temporarily switched back to my old cable modem, but I'd like to be able to use this MB8611 modem because it is capable of much faster speeds than my old modem.

Thanks.

After a couple of months of stable modem service after Comcast downgraded my modem to firmware 8611-19.2.18, I recently received firmware 8611-21.3.7 and my modem is once again rebooting a couple of times a day. This is pretty infuriating. I reached out to Motorola, and this time the person I got a hold of was completely unhelpful. She suggested contacting Comcast and requesting that they downgrade my firmware again. How about Motorola and Comcast getting together and fixing the problem! Its ridiculous that this modem is on Comcast's approved list, yet they keep pushing firmware out that makes it unstable.

Not sure what to do at this point.

Similar to others, bought the MB8611 as an upgrade from a previous (stable) modem.  All was well initially, then it started randomly losing connectivity about once a day, sometimes maybe 4 times.  Put the old modem back in place, rock solid.  Put the MB8611 back in and problem resumed.  Worked with Xfinity support, they eventually said it was a bad modem and to contact Motorola.  I did that, opening a ticket.  Weeks went by without any response from Motorola, and in the meantime it was suddenly stable.  Motorola finally contacted me, I sent a bunch of screenshots/etc., told them it was now stable again but they wanted to replace it.  Put the replacement back in and it was worse than when my original one was unstable so I returned the replacement (back in February).  Time passed and once again it's disconnecting at least once a day again for the last several days.

Today I did a hard reset of the modem (before I found all of the posts here about the issue) and firmware is currently 19.2.8.  If it disconnects I'll check what firmware it has after it reboots.  Based on everything I'm seeing here in the forums, plus reviews on Amazon, I may just replace this one with another brand and since I'm stuck with it keep it as a spare/backup.

It's rebooted at least once (uptime was 0) and the firmware stayed at the same version, 19.2.8.  It's been up now for 16 hours but I know it'll reboot at some point. Just ordered an Arris S33 cable modem and once received I'll replace this one and just set it on the shelf as a backup.

Rebooted again and stayed on 19.2.18.  (I typo'd the version number in my previous comments.)  I'm now replacing it for stability since my Arris S33 has arrived.  These random reboot are a pain when you rely on your internet connectivity these days for everything.

My MB8611 started rebooting a couple days ago. It's happening at least 2-3 times per day. Current firmware version is 8611-19.2.18. Any suggestions on getting this fixed asap? I'm going to need to switch to RCN if I can't get this fixed.

I've noticed several threads on this topic and after experiencing the same issues I wanted to weigh in.

I acknowledge my situation doesn't apply to everyone, but it is without a doubt a significant factor in my scenario: the Motorola MB8611 is ridiculously, absurdly, embarrassingly sensitive to heat.

I will spare all the long, drawn-out story of how I came to realize this over a six-month period; however, I am certain that heat saturation combined with less-than-open-air ventilation was a sure catalyst for my modem to reboot on a frequent basis. After a recent router upgrade required me to rewire my network cabinet, I experimented with a few modem placement locations. Prior to this the modem had been online for 50+ days with no issues, but after cramming things back in the cabinet it started rebooting within a few hours, and then increased in frequency where it would happen several times within a 15-minute span. After all the different options, I ultimately placed it ON TOP OF THE RACK and now has been running for nearly 6 days and am getting ~1.4Gbps downstream on my 1.2Gbps plan--just so I can hit that 1.2TB monthly cap that much quicker, ugh. I may add a fan to the cabinet and see if I can relocate it back in there at a later date, but this was a real eye opener. Hope this helps some of you at the very least!
