Modem Compatibility

I don't intend to use or need the VOIP service, that's bundled in my package.

I am interested in using the NETGEAR Cable Modem CM500 which does not support VOIP, however

I have heard that my internet won't work unless the modem I activate also supports VOIP.  Is this true or false?

It'll work, but why pay for a package that you don't use? Plus remember that due to local and federal laws, Comcast has to maintain 911 connectivity to any active service, so if you don't have an active voice modem, Comcast will send you one of their leased modems...at $14/mo.

Why not just get the CM500V, which has the voice feature included? Or change to a different package without the phone feature?
