Mac Laptop cannot connect to XFINITY hot spot

I don't get the login screen that shows in all your support pages.  I get a login screen with "Automatic" in a dropdown, user & password.

Then I get the error the Wi-Fi Network XFINITY could not be joined.  It's 4 bars.  It's stable.  It DOESN'T WORK.

Please let me know how to make this work.

I haven't seen ANY instructions other than the ones I've followed.  And, I know my login and password, because I'm logged in to another unsecured WiFi to be able to even type in this forum.

Please help.

This is so frustrating!  4 years ago, Comcast had great customer support.  Now there is nothing.  Can't call. Can't chat.  Can't message (189 people in front of me?)

No one has been able to answer this.

Good evening, @Phish-Finder, and thanks for reaching out through our Community Forums page for help with signing in to the Xfinity WiFi hotspot recently. I'm sorry to see that you're unable to do so, as our Hotspot network is an awesome way for our amazing customers to use their internet from almost anywhere! It's also a great way to save money on mobile data charges! You've come to the right place to help get this issue resolved.

You mentioned that you're seeing this issue on your Mac laptop. Are you having the same issue on the same hotspot with any other devices, such as your mobile phone?

I don't have another device handy.  Just my Mac.

That's okay. Have you already attempted to turn off your WiFi, reboot your laptop, and try to reconnect to the hotspot?

Are you trying to connect at a business, Have you tried checking for any interruptions that may be keeping you from connecting to this hotspot? You can check here

Not at a business.  The ssid is showing up on my wifi list, so it has to be at least working.  The hot spot map shows the hot spot is next door, and there are 2 more across the street.

This is the error I get.

Mac won't do captive portal type hotspots without some help.  No browser to spawn in networking for the login.

Is an app available that works with your Mac OS version in the app store?  You need the 'secure profile' (certificate) installed.   https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/wifi#app  Click the app store link on this page to spawn the app store on your MAC / device.

@flatlander3 I'm using Chrome on the Mac.  This is the first time I've seen ANYTHING about a secure profile.  It isn't mentioned AT ALL in all the instructions pages I've seen.

Can I add this without messing up all my other connections? Can I do this as a different "Location" in network preferences?  I only need this in very limited situations, and I don't want it to mess up all the other connections I have that work.

Continued:

The link you gave me has information, and provides a link for downloading mobile apps - don't need those.  It has another link for "secure profile" that leads to another page - that has links to downloading mobile apps.  And then the link for more information goes back to the first page.  I'm going around in circles, and none of them lead to the App Store.

I opened the App Store on my Mac, and searched for xfinity and comcast, and there were no results.  Can you provide a direct link to the Mac App to install a secure profile?  Thanks.

Continued #2: found Profile.  Installed it.  According to the web page, it should ask me to enter my credentials when I install.  It did not ask for credentials.  So now, when I click on XFINITY it goes straight to the can't connect.  I don't know what profiles are, or how they work, but I don't want a profile to prevent me connecting to WiFi at home (which is xfinity) or work (not xfinity).

Oh well. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your patience, @Phish-Finder. The Xfinity WiFi network offers two SSIDs, or network names, for user device connections..

xfinitywifi - Open Xfinity WiFi for public use

XFINITY - Secure Xfinity WiFi for encrypted connection for public use

The hot spot that is available for you to use is the hot spot listed as “xfinitywifi”.

Here are the steps to connect to the “XFINITY” hot spot.

  1. While connected to the Internet, download the latest version of the Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app from the Apple App store or the Google Play store.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Sign in to the app using your primary or secondary username and password.
  4. If you're using an Android device, the app will download and install the profile automatically. It will also automatically connect you to secure Xfinity WiFi whenever you are in range. – Stop here for Android.
  5. iOS users, following sign in, you will be prompted to install a secure profile.
  6. Follow the prompts to complete installation of the secure profile on your device.

Note: It is critical to perform the next step within 8 minutes of downloading the profile. If you are not able to, you will need to restart the download process.

  1. Once the profile has downloaded, navigate to phone settings, then profile downloaded, and tap install. You will be prompted for your device passcode.
  2. The iOS device will now automatically connect to Xfinity WiFi securely whenever you are in range. – Stop here for iOS.

Here is the link to more details on installing a secure profile. Please let me know if this helps. https://comca.st/3nXNC56

@Phish-Finder

OK, I thought they might have a separate MAC OS app with the map locations on it.  I guess not.  My MAC uses an older radio that can't see the XFINITY secure public hotspots.  What if you follow the instructions on this page:  https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wifi-for-mac

Followed this link, logged in, dowloaded and installed Profile.

According to the web page, it should give me a window to enter my user ID and password,

It doesn't do that. It doesn't do anything.  So, I don't know if it's working.

So now, when I click on XFINITY it goes straight to the can't connect without the login screen.  Not helpful.

I don't know what profiles are, or how they work, but I don't want a profile to prevent me connecting to WiFi at home (which is xfinity) or work (not xfinity).

Do you currently have an account with us? If so, I'd like to check more details about the signal levels in your area and review any existing log-in details we can find.

To send the requested information in a private message to Xfinity Support from any Forum page:

  •    Click "Sign In" if that prompt is visible
  •    Click the "Direct Messaging" icon
  •    Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
  •   The "To:" line prompts you to "Type the name of a person", but don't do that.
  •       Instead, type "Xfinity Support" there. As you are typing a drop-down list appears.
  •   Select "Xfinity Support" from the list. An "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line.
  •   Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
  •   Press Enter or tap the >icon to send it
