Laptop not finding connection

My cell phone and kindle can find the Xfinity modem, but my Dell laptop can't find the modem.  I have tried everything and the network doesn't show up.

I have just solved this problem for a friend who has a Dell Inspiron 5755 laptop and could not see their WiFi SSID (the Network ID) when they migrated from an early version Gateway to the new XB7 Gateway (3rd Generation, white unit).

The solution was simple - update the Intel Wireless AC 3160 driver.   Initially Windows 10 told us that the driver was up-to-date, but when we went to the Dell Support site for their laptop model, we found an updated Intel driver for the WiFi models 3160, 3165, 7260 & 7265.  After downloading this software and installing the driver on Windows 10, the Laptop was able to see the XB7's WiFi SSID and connect to it.

To check your Laptop to see if it has the correct Intel WiFi driver, you can use Device Manager and look under Network adapters for your WiFi adapter's Driver version (Driver tab under Properties).  If it is not as shown below, it needs an update:

  • After you install this package, the Intel 7265(D0) and 3165 driver version in Device Manager is 19.51.21.1.
  • After you install this package, the Intel 7265(C0), 7260 and 3160 driver version in Device Manager is 18.33.17.1.

Earlier versions of the Intel WiFi drivers were unable to handle selecting the appropriate WiFi band (2.4GHz or 5GHz) to give the best performance when the two bands have the same SSID (default configuration of the XB7 Gateway).  The driver was sufficiently confused to not display the WiFi network!
