Is it OK to use an 863 Mbps Netgear C7000 on a 1.2 Gbps plan?

Hi,

My friend wants to use a Netgear C7000 modem/router combo on a 1.2 Gbps Internet plan, the C7000 has a max speed of 863 Mbps.

800 Mbps is fast enough for their needs & the renewed Netgear C7000 price is right.

Can I assume the only negative will be max speeds of 863 Mbps instead of the full 1.2 Gbps?

At the top of the Device Support page it states "make sure you purchase a device that has a download speed that is faster than your current Internet plan speed." So, if we don't do that, what happens?

Is Xfinity going to tell us we can't use that C7000 because it is incompatible?

Thanks

What happens is that if one uses an incompatible modem for a faster speed tier, the modem will default down to using a slower speed configuration file. A compatible device needs to be used. They may only get 100-400 Mbps with that modem.

Thank you for responding.

Why wouldn't it default down to 863 Mbps?

Good morning, and thank you for reaching out to our Xfinity Community team for support via Forums. We appreciate your patience while being connected to a specialist and for bringing your modem concerns to our attention for your friend. Our goal at Xfinity is always to ensure that our customers are able to completely enjoy their amazing plan/services to their full capability, comfortably. If your modem is limited and not able to exceed or meet your plan's service levels then yes, the worst that will happen is that your equipment won't allow you access to the true speed of your plan. Sometimes these limitations can cause services to stop working altogether if the equipment is no longer compatible with Xfinity. Have you ever considered renting a modem from Xfinity? We provide amazing, powerful modems to our customers for a small equipment leasing fee of $14.00 a month, so you do not have to worry about things like this.

I no longer work for Comcast.

I can't answer that authoritatively, sorry. I'm not a Comcast employee.
