Is Comcast really planning on CG-NATting customers?

Hello all, I am looking for clarification on whether Comcast is intending to start carrier grade NATting customers? Will there be a means of opting out? (If so and if not respectively, then I will most definitely be switching providers......)

Hello again T_W !! I doubt that you'll get any kind of answer on that here.... I reported this to Comcast insiders when I first saw it a year ago. It's also been reported to their network engineering department's higher ups, but so far, nothing but denial and silence.

@EG yeah I pretty much had the feeling this is screaming into the void posting here. I already noticed since signing up a year ago or so that while I still have a global IP on my WAN facing personal router, my first hop is always a 10.0.0.0/8 private IP. I still have inbound connectivity from the internet, but for how long?......

Is Jason Livingood still kicking around the company? If so, then I wonder what his opinion of this might be.....

Yes he is. Denial and crickets. Can't blame him though, he likely has to tow the company line. It would be nice if he would pop in to these boards now and then. It's been years.

Hey @train_wreck! I hope you are doing well. I'm trying to get these resolved. I have asked about this in the past and it was mentioned that we shouldn't be CGNat since we are dual-stack. However, this has been popping up more on the Xfinity forums. Could you possibly post a tracert so I have an example?

Michael, thanks for the response and dedication to looking into this. I don’t personally have a trace that shows this, but according to your other reply here you’ve already collected some. I will say that I’m not sure I follow the logic of CGNAT being not implemented due to dual-stack. Those things can and do exist alongside each other. The cell carriers already do this exact thing; my phone on Verizon has a CGNAT v4 as well as a global v6.

The trace in https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/6834f66e0cfffc3f9146b198 shows a CGN IP in hop #2.

@BruceW Yup! Already got one thanks to @EG. I need to gather multiple examples as I'm trying to make a case for it.

Just wanted to follow up here. I'm currently reaching out to some people to see if I can get an answer or a workaround. Just to set an expectation I may not even get an answer. Just know I'm still working on this and will follow up if I come across any updates.

@XfinityMichaelC yeah I know the drill, this may or may not be publicly officially released. If you have any influence at all in this process, I would request that having an OPT OUT mechanism would solve any of my misgivings about CG-NAT. 99% of people won't ever bother you at all with opting out, and the other 1% of people who actually know what it is and why they'd want to remove it would be able to do so.

My 2 🪙, and thanks a lot for looking into this.
