IP Address Location

MLB.TV uses my IP address to determine if a game is blacked out in my area.  Occasionally a game is blacked out that should not be.  When I call their support, they determine my IP address is no longer at my actual state so they need to update my account.  Maybe a week later the same thing happens, Comcast is apparently changing where my IP address is actually located.  This is really annoying.

Can I get some support to fix this nonsense?

Comcast/Xfinity assigns your public IP address, but does not control where others think that IP is located. That's handled by third parties. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/fix-geolocation-of-my-ipaddress/666127b51e56d61567f91b4d?commentId=66618f1609e34b487ca2560a and https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/correct-geolocation-data may help you correct the location info.

Changing your public IP may or may not change where these third parties think you are located. If you're using your own modem and router, you can use the router's "clone MAC" feature to change your IP.

If you're using a rental Comcast device, they do not provide a way to change the IP address, and they won't change it for you, so you'd have to:

  • swap out the gateway for another, or
  • place the gateway in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace your gateway with customer-owned equipment

A VPN is another possibility. If you use one your public IP won't actually change, but systems you connect to will see the IP provided by the VPN rather than your actual public IP.

True, but most routers allow you to clone the MAC of a connected device, and/or to manually enter a MAC. When the MAC changes rebooting the modem and router will cause Comcast to assign a different address That may or may not cause the troublesome site to change where it thinks you are located, it depends on the geolocation service they use.

My Tp-link AX5400 does allow me to set a custom MAC or clone.  You think that changing the Router MAC address will force Comcast to issue a new Internet IP address?

If I just randomly change my router LAN MAC Address (**-**-**-**-**-*0) to (**-**-**-**-**-*1) for example will get me a new Internet IP address and will not affect my existing network with 30+ devices on the router?

Seems odd to me that the modem would see this as a need to request a new (hopefully geographically local)  Internet IP address.
