Internet Not Working

My Internet's been out with no solid conclusion as to how to get it back up again. I've switched out cords and unplug-replugged a few times, I even used the troubleshooting. The internet box itself is working overtime, it gets warm and something smells like it's burning when plugged in. I'm not sure what else to do now, so any assistance regarding this would be great.
