Internet drop for 15-30 seconds every hour or so

Hello all,

 

My internet has been dropping for about 15 - 30 seconds every hour for the past 6 months or so. In the past 6 months I haven't made any changes to my account or home network. I did some test's and it seems like the internet doesn't fully drop, but speeds decrease to around 1-5Kb/s. 

 

 

I think my modem is fairly new. Maybe a year or year and a half old so I don't believe this is the issue. 

 

Here's what I'm planning on doing:

1. Replace splitter in attic. (Right now I have 2 Antronix CMC2004H's || My plan is to get a newer 1x8)

2. Replace coax cable from office wall to modem in office

3. Replace modem

4. Replace ethernet going from modem to router

5. Replace ethernet going from router to Desktop

5.5 Replace / elminate router (don't think this is the issue)

6. Have line replaced from telephone pole to house

7. Replace coax cable from splitter down to office (really don't want to do this)

 

Does this sound like a good action plan? Any other suggestions here?

The upstream power is on the high side and it may be intermittently fluctuating even higher to out of spec levels (already is on channel #2). That can cause random disconnects, spontaneous re-booting of the modem, speed, packet loss, latency problems, and the un-bonding of channels.

In a self troubleshooting effort to try to obtain better connectivity / more wiggle room, check to see if there are there any excess/unneeded coax cable splitters in the line leading to the modem that can be eliminated/re-configured. Any splitters that remain should be high quality and cable rated for 5-1002 MHz, bi-directional, and no gold colored garbage types like GE, RadioShack, RCA, Philips, Leviton, Magnavox, and Rocketfish from big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Target, Wal-Mart etc. Splitters should be swapped with known to be good / new ones to test

If there aren't any unneeded splitters that can be eliminated and if your coax wiring setup can't be reconfigured so that there is a single two way splitter connected directly off of the drop from the street/pole with one port feeding the modem and the other port feeding the rest of the house/equipment with additional splits as needed, and you've checked all the wiring and fittings for integrity and tightness and refresh them by taking them apart then check for and clean off any corrosion / oxidation on the center wire and put them back together again, then perhaps it's best to book a tech visit to investigate and correct.

Start with the modem's signal stats. Perhaps they already are, or they are close to being out of spec and intermittently they go completely of spec. Try getting them here http://192.168.100.1 or here http://10.0.0.1

Please post the *Downstream Power Level*, the *Upstream Power Level*, and the *SNR* (Signal to Noise Ratio) numbers.

Again. What is the exact make and model number of the modem ?

Is this a WiFi connection ?

That's a very good brand, but they may possibly be malfunctioning. YMMV.

Awesome, thank you very much I will start with the splitters and try to clean / confirm all coax connections are solid connections. 

 

Do you recommend any brand? Should I stick with Antronix and just replace them?

Hi, I made some changes to my splitters (Didn't replace them yet).

 

I noticed that the line coming from the street was feeding a 4 way splitter (Antronix CMC2004H). Coming out of the 4 way splitter 1 Coax was going to the modem,2 coax cables were going to bedrooms for a cable box and the last one used to connect another 2 way splitter. The other 2 way splitter (Antronix CMC2002H) was used in 2 other bedrooms for a cable box. 

TLDR; Street line -> 4 way splitter -> modem , 2  bedrooms , two way splitter -> 2 bedrooms

 

I changed this around so the line coming from the street goes into the 2 way splitter. Then 1 coax to the modem and the other coax to the 4 way splitter. The 4 way splitter then feeds the 4 bedrooms for cable. 

TLDR; Street line -> two way splitter -> modem, four way splitter -> 4 bedrooms
