Intermittent Latency Spikes Every 15–16 Minutes — Wired Connection, Gateway Stays Stable

I’m having an intermittent latency/jitter issue with my Xfinity internet that I’m hoping someone from the advanced support/network side can review.

Most of the time my connection is completely normal. I get around 880 Mbps down / 260 Mbps up, and my normal latency is around 10–15 ms. However, several times per hour my latency suddenly spikes into the hundreds of milliseconds, sometimes as high as 700–800+ ms, then immediately returns to normal.

I am connected by Ethernet directly to an Xfinity XB8 gateway, so this is not a Wi-Fi issue.

I’ve been continuously monitoring the connection with PingPlotter at 0.5-second intervals to both Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and Google (8.8.8.8). The important part is that both destinations experience the large spikes at essentially the exact same time.

The spikes also appear to occur on a fairly regular cycle, approximately every 15–16 minutes.

During the spikes, my local Xfinity gateway (10.0.0.1) remains around 1 ms, while the latency begins increasing after the gateway on the Xfinity side and continues through to the final destination.

For example, around 12:46:50 PM on October 7, I captured the same event simultaneously:

Cloudflare went from roughly 10–15 ms to several hundred milliseconds, while Google also spiked at the same time. The local gateway remained under 1 ms.

I have also tested with both destinations running continuously for over an hour and the same recurring pattern appears on both graphs.

I already:

  • rebooted the XB8 and left it unplugged for 5 minutes
  • checked the modem signal levels
  • tested bufferbloat
  • tested multiple external destinations
  • confirmed my local gateway latency stays normal during the events
  • temporarily paused other devices on the network to rule out normal household traffic

My modem’s downstream/upstream levels and SNR appear normal between events, and normal speed tests do not show the problem because the spikes are brief and intermittent.

I’m trying to avoid having this treated only as a speed/Wi-Fi issue because it is specifically intermittent WAN latency/jitter.
