Intermittent Internet connection drops – MDD timeouts and packet loss
I’m experiencing intermittent Internet connection drops. The entire Internet connection drops for about a minute and then restores itself. Multiple devices are affected.
I have a customer-owned NETGEAR CAX30 cable modem/router. I tested from a computer connected directly to the CAX30 by Ethernet.
During an interruption, continuous ping to the router (192.168.1.1) remains stable, while pings to both 8.8.8.8 and Comcast DNS (75.75.75.75) time out simultaneously. This appears to rule out the local Ethernet/Wi-Fi connection.
The modem event log repeatedly records “MDD message timeout” and CM-STATUS events around the times of the interruptions.
Current upstream levels are approximately 44–46 dBmV and normally look healthy. Most downstream channels also look good, but several channels around 549–567 MHz have shown reduced SNR, with one as low as approximately 33.8 dB. Uncorrectable errors have also been recorded.
I checked the two accessible coax connections inside my apartment and both are secure.
Xfinity Assistant currently reports that the connection and settings look healthy and that there is no area outage. However, the problem is intermittent and usually clears by itself.
Could an Xfinity representative please review the signal/RF history, intermittent noise or ingress, and the coax/drop serving the building? I have screenshots of the ping tests, modem signal levels, and event logs available if needed.
