Incorrect Public IP Geolocation (Shows Ashburn VA Instead of Morgantown WV)

Hello,
I’m having an issue where my Comcast-assigned public IP address is geolocating incorrectly.

My physical service address is Morgantown, West Virginia, but my public IP frequently resolves to:

  • Ashburn, VA

  • New York, NY

  • Newark, NJ

This causes websites, maps, weather services, and search engines to show the wrong region.

I have already tried the following:

  • Renewing DHCP lease

  • Rebooting modem

  • Using my own approved Netgear/Nighthawk modem

  • Clearing browser/cache

  • Testing multiple devices on the network

All devices on my network experience the same incorrect IP geolocation behavior.

Could you please submit an IP Geolocation Correction Request for my current public IP to:

  • MaxMind

  • Neustar IP Intelligence

  • IP2Location

The correct geographic location for this IP should be:
Morgantown, WV (26505)

Please let me know if you need any additional information, such as the IP address or traceroute. I would really appreciate your help getting this corrected.

Thank you.

Comcast/Xfinity assigns your public IP address, but does not control where others think that IP is located. That's done by third parties. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/fix-geolocation-of-my-ipaddress/666127b51e56d61567f91b4d?commentId=66618f1609e34b487ca2560a and https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/correct-geolocation-data may help you correct the location info.

Changing your public IP may or may not change where these third parties think you are located. If you're using your own modem and router, you can use the router's "clone MAC" feature to change your IP.

If you're using a rental Comcast device, they do not provide a way to change the IP address, and they won't change it for you, so you'd have to:

  • swap out the gateway for another, or
  • place the gateway in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace your gateway with customer-owned equipment

A VPN is another possibility. If you use one your public IP won't actually change, but systems you connect to will see the IP provided by the VPN rather than your actual public IP.

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the information.

I reviewed the support articles you linked. They state that:

“If the location is incorrect, the ISP can request a correction with the third-party geolocation providers.”

This is what I’m requesting.
Changing my IP will not help because the entire block appears to be misregistered.

Can you please escalate this to the Comcast/Xfinity team that handles IP Geolocation Correction (MaxMind, Neustar, IP2Location)?

Many other users have had this corrected by the Xfinity Support team through this forum, and that is the resolution I am seeking as well.

Thank you.

... the ISP can request a correction ...

It can, but it won't. That would cost them a few pennies. The key sentence in https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/correct-geolocation-data is:

If your geolocation is configured incorrectly, you’ll need to contact either the website you’re experiencing issues on, or the geolocation services themselves.

Whenever it can, Comcast/Xfinity throws the responsibility for fixing things back onto its customers.
