How to resolve LAN hostname?
I have two Linux computers on my network. They have hostnames pc1 and pc2, and the comcast/xfinity router/gateway recognizes their hostnames and provides them with IP addresses.
However, if I try to resolve the IP addresses for these hostnames within the LAN, it fails (e.g. ping pc1 fails). Ping succeeds by their assigned IP address.
I don't think its a caching issue. If I download a ping utility for my iPhone connected to the LAN - same behavior.
Doesn't the router run a DNS service for the LAN?

No, Xfinity gear does not have Any DNS capability or resolver. No loopback capability. You have the Yugo of gateways. No heated and ventilated seats in those either.
Down and dirty is just edit the /etc/hosts file on your linux boxes. Add your other box names and IP's.
