How do I stop my Xfinity modem/router from changing the DNS setting on my Macs?

My Xfinity/Technicolor CGM4140COM modem/router does not appear to provide a way to configure a DNS for my home network (4 Macs + other devices).  So, on each of my Macs, I've tried using System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS to specify my preferred DNS servers.  When I click the Apply button, my DNS settings appear in the Network panel.

However, after a period of time (anywhere between 1 second and 1 to 2 hours), my DNS settings revert to the Xfinity defaults.  Is there a way to stop this?

Nope. They have disabled this feature.... You can't even change them in the individual clients because their gateway devices no longer even act as DNS forwarders / proxies. What are the exact issues that you are having ? Why do you think that they are DNS related ?

@EG, When I'm using Xfinity's DNS, site to site transitions in all Web browsers are annoying slow.  During the brief times the OpenDNS name servers are active, browser performance is dramatically faster.

To tide me over until I find a way to keep Xfinity from discarding my OpenDNS name servers, I've created two keyboard shortcuts (using Keyboard Maestro):

  • Open System Preferences & select the Network pane – to check the current IP DNS addresses
  • Replace the current DNS settings with OpenDNS (208.67.220.220 & 208.67.222.222)
