How do I change my Gateway's IP address? (WAN IP that is automatically configured)

Through the xfinity app I have tried changing my WAN IP but the app says it is automatically configured. I have turned it off and back on, I have tried renew and release on windows, and the only way I can change it is a VPN. If anyone could help that would be great.

If it's a Comcast rental device, they do not provide a way to change the public IP address, and they won't change it for you, so you'd have to:

  • swap out the gateway for another, or
  • place the gateway in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace your rental gateway with customer-owned equipment

If you own the gateway, look for a "clone MAC" or similar option.

@BruceW I bought a netgear router to use while in Bridge Mode. I logged into my Gateway, turned on Bridge Mode, plugged in and plugged in my netgear router to the ethernet port on the back of my gateway, now I can't get an internet connection to establish. However, when I turn bridge mode off, my netgear router has an internet connection. Are there any other setting I need to enable for this to work? Can I leave my PC plugged in to Gateway while also my plugging in my router to it or will only 1 ethernet port be available for use?

@user_450d3e, thank you for taking the time to reach out over Xfinity Forums. Welcome to the community! What @BruceW has stated is correct. Please keep us posted if you need additional assistance setting up your network. Our team will be on standby.

I no longer work for Comcast.

In bridge mode only one port on the gateway will be active, so your PC should be plugged into a port on the router, and the router's WAN port should be the only Ethernet connection to the gateway.
