Hey, stop changing the settings on my router!

I have turned off all automatic "Optimisation" settings because I constantly monitor the strength and speed of my network and manually set the channels myself. However, some bright genius at Xfinity set up an interval that automatically scans the networks around me from the XFi access point and will magically decide that the best channel setting is the same channel that 10 other routers are using.

At this point, why bother giving the option if you're just going to override it with your useless software anyway?

I'll be leaving Xfinity at the end of the month, and this is the reason why. Your AP software is incredibly restrictive for anyone with an inclination or a sense of what to do in it, and it doesn't end up mattering at the end of the day anyway because the settings will just be overwritten by some incorrectly opinionated algorithm!

Assuming you are using a gateway provided by xfinity, you cannot permanently disable those functions. You may be able to change them temporarily, but the next time your gateway does a refesh/renew, it will revert to their settings.  If you want granular control over your WAN and LAN settings, you will need to return your xfinity gateway and buy an approved third party solution.  If you do decide to go with the latter, make absolutely sure that it is compatible with your speed tier level.  It is smart to get one that accepts higher speeds than your current subscription, so that you can get higher speeds when they become available.  I would recommend that you go with separate modem and router; that way, when it is time to upgrade, you can upgrade just the device that you need to upgrade.

Hey, great idea. But the problem is persistent with every person in my apartment building. They also have XFi gateways, but they lack the technical know-how to fix the problem with overlapping channels. So what about them? Just YOLO the channel selection and hope for the best? Force them to learn how to set up and configure a different gateway?

The problem goes beyond just me being annoyed by my settings not persisting. The problem is that the gateway that is supposed to find the best channels in high-density network areas always chooses the same channels for all the routers in that area

Not sure what you missed in my post. but you will not be able to change the settings if you have xfinity supplied hardware. If you continue to use it, you will have to live with it.  The algorithm they use is not as robust as most third party routers.  xfinity has to supply gateways that have settings that are suitable for the majority of installations, and thus the way it chooses channels is very limited.  If it really bothers you that much, you will have to go to approved third party solutions as I discussed above.  Yelling and screaming about it is not going to change anything.  They choose the settings on their hardware that work in the majority of cases so that they don't have to spend time troubleshooting it.  It is just the way it is, and it is that way with all ISP supplied gateways.

Hello @invisible_squid we appreciate you reaching out on Xfinity forums. Based on my understanding the Xfinity app and admin tool the only channel adjustments you can make would be separating the 2.4 and 5.0 bands instead of having one WiFi network that automatically connects to the best option.

Our Xfi system auto-selects the best channel and manages the channels automatically for every device connected to your network. There wouldn't be an option to adjust the channels outside of purchasing your own modem that has the capability. Any settings it allows you to change in this case would be reset every time the modem refreshes.
