Help with my 2 port modem

Ok, so I pay for xfinity internet speed of up to 1200 Mbps. If I hook my modem directly up to the computer, I get about 1500 download, which is fantastic. Now the problem is, I also want to use my router, but the router doesn't have any ports on it higher than gigabit. So if I route my modem through the router and back to my computer, I lose speed for my internet. So I bought an Arris s33 modem which has a 2.5 Gbps port and a 1 Gbps port, thinking I could use both. Of course, I come to find out that you can't use both ports unless you purchase a second IP address from your provider. I called Xfinity and they told me they don't offer that to residential customers, and it would have to be a business line. Is that the case? Can I not get a 2nd IP address? Was I misinformed and this is possible?

I'm at my wits end here, and I don't know how to proceed, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Using both ports won't get you any more speed. The S33 already has a 2.5 gig port. Just use that. And you certainly do not need to get a second public / WAN IP address assigned. That won't get you any more speed either. Your problem is that you need to also use a router that supports greater than gig speeds (Both WAN and LAN sides).

I wasn't trying to get more speed by using both ports. I was trying to use the 2.5 port to go directly to my computer, and then use the gigabit port to go to my router for things that I don't care about getting full speed. So I was trying to divide it up without losing speed by going through my router.

My setup that I'd like to have is the 2.5 port of the modem directly to my computer so I can get full speed, then the 1 gig port on the modem to my router to give internet to things that aren't really in need of that kind of speed like my tv, chromecasts, google home, blink mini camera, and stuff like that. And the routers that have 2.5gig ports are crazy expensive right now, so I'm just trying to figure out a way to do this without having to spend over 300 on a new router. So the one solution I found was that I could get a second IP that would activate the second port on my modem that I bought, but now I don't even know if that's possible, or something that xfinity even offers anymore.

Oh o/k, I see now. Thanks for expanding on it !! As long as it doesn't matter to you about the speed of that 1 gig port, it may still be possible to get a second public / WAN IP assigned to it.

They are phasing it out but I'm going to escalate your issue to the Comcast corporate employees that are available to these boards. We've seen cases here where they have been able to get this accomplished for customers even when it is not listed in their rate cards, YMMV. You should get a reply here in your topic. Good luck !

I don't think anyone is coming. So I spent 450 dollars on a new router instead.

Hello @imneveralOne. How are you doing today? I wanted to follow up with you. Are you still in need of assistance? If so, will you please elaborate on what I may assist you with today?

I no longer work for Comcast.
