HELP! - Moving Gateway Issues - Troubleshoot Help Needed

*** long post for a simple question***

Facts:

- internet connection has been terrible over recent weeks

- whole family working/schooling/gaming from home

- need better connection so video conference calls stop dropping out

- new house that has ten outlets that have cat5e cable (currently ending in a phone jack) and coax cable

- only one coax cable in the house is active right now, and it runs to near the downstairs tv where the internet and cable box is connected off a splitter

- all cables (cat5e and coax) terminate in a box in the closet

OBJECTIVE:

I am turning all cat5e cables into ethernet cables (both the end that terminates in the box in the close and the jack in the wall).  I need to plug the ends in the closet into a powerful router that is connected to a modem (or a two in one).  This router will send ethernet around my house to the ten ports AND also push wifi (not great as it's in the closet but I also have wifi extenders).

ISSUES:

- when I move the current xFi gateway to the closet and connect it to the only active coax cable, it won't connect to the the internet.  What I mean is, the gateway connects (solid white light), my phone connects to the gateway but then there is no internet connection.

- I am currently trying to test the connection with the gateway in the closet before I buy an expensive router

I don't understand what I am doing wrong.  Any helpful suggestions are much appreciated.

Find where all your cable connections meet, the one your trying connect to isn’t hooked up to anything, if it was the modem would lock in

If you have the cat 5 where your modem is now why not use that as your feeder line to where your cat5 cables all meet? Then you don’t have to move anything

This is from your own post

Thank you for your reply @CCAndrew

I'm not sure I understand the advice (sorry).

There are 10 coax cables and 10 cat5e cables.  The end point of all these cables are placed throughout the house in a wall port/jack (currently the cat5e terminates to a phone jack).  The OTHER end of those cables all curl up in the box in the closet.  All of those coax cables are unused except one where it is connect to another end in that closet box and then again (assuming it's the same cable) near the TV  to connect the modem and cable box.  That's why I am assuming it's the only 'active' coax.

In terms of the cat5e cable, there ends of all 10 of these are also in the closet box.  Are you suggesting that I can connect the modem to the one end that is near the tv and then find the other end of it in the close box and install the modem/router combo that I want to in order to plug the rest of the ends of the cat5e cable and then have interenet connection at all of the outlets (that currently terminate in a phone jack)?

Your advice has been helpful. Thank you

Yes, that’s it exactly. It accomplishes the same thing as moving the modem to where all the cables meet. The bear of the task will be tracking down which cat 5 belongs where if they aren’t labeled and having good connectors with the wiring
