Gateway login/ administrator tools/ 10.0.0.1 credentials

If I’m attempting to access the gateway login through http://10.0.0.1 with username: admin and password: password to change those credentials to something more secure, how would I do that if the default credentials aren’t valid and resetting the router doesn’t help to recognize those credentials? (I have the newest XB8 router, do routers XB6 and newer not have access?).  Does Xfinity have access to change those credentials or reset them for me?

When resetting the device to factory defaults, are you pressing and holding in the recessed reset button on the rear (or use the WPS button if it doesn't have a reset button hole) for 25-30 seconds ?

Hello @user_x4awq0 the safest and easiest way to change the password is in your Xfinity app. Do you have the app downloaded on any of your mobile devices?

@XfinityDuron

Question please. What makes it "safer" ?

If I recall correctly, a long time ago the username was something like CusAdmim and password was password. Then the username was admin and the password was password. Now it seems the username is still admin but the gateway password is the initial WiFi password on the label on the bottom of your modem. Maybe they pushed through that security improvement?

So after a factory reset, the SSID and WiFi password are per the label. When you go in to the app (easier) and you change the SSID and WiFi password, the WiFi password change covers both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. So no more password and SSID per frequency band. The gateway (XB*) e.g. 10.0.0.1 initial password will not change even though you changed the WiFi password. So they are only the same for a moment. Of course then you may want to change your gateway password too.
