Gateway activation loop

Hi,

A couple of days ago, my cable modem was replaced with an XB6 (Technicolor CGM4140COM). Everything works fine, but I seem to get redirected to the gateway activation website (https://register.be.xfinity.com/activate?channel=WALLEDGARDEN) every so often. I can otherwise browse the net without a problem and this seems to only happen eveyr few hours.

I did go through the activation process, but it keeps coming back. Obviously, the equipment is activated and I'm online.

This happens on multiple devices (computer, phone, tablet... etc.).

I tried calling your tech support but after being passed around a few times, I got put on hold forever, so I just gave up. Any help would be appreciated.

Side note: trying to go to a website and getting redirected to https://register.be.xfinity.com/activate?channel=WALLEDGARDEN seems to trigger a certifcate error in Chrome, which makes it sound like the website is not to be trusted. It's a little alarming to someone who may not understand what they're looking at.

Thanks.

If you can get through, try calling 1-800-comcast and ask a rep to completely remove the modem from your account and to "re-provision" it from scratch. Also ask them to confirm that the provisioning and account data in their database is correct and complete.

The answer was to reboot my personal router, which sits behind Comcast's cable modem/gateway. I guess swapping the cable modem requires the rest of the equipment to be restarted. Weird failure mode where it was only intermittent.

Took a while to get to that answer, having to escalate within Comcast to get to this answer (including sending a tech to my home). I'll note that nobody working for Comcast bothered to respond to this.

An FYI. If you are hanging a stand-alone / separate router off of the gateway device, and the gateway is not in *bridge mode*, you are cascading 2 routing devices which results in an undesirable "double NAT" condition on your home network.

Google "double NAT" for info about it's potential pitfalls.

You really should put it in to bridge mode. Here's how;
