Frequently Dropping Internet on Ethernet and Wi-Fi

We've been having an issue for the past few months where the internet will drop multiple times a day for a few seconds or minutes then come back up automatically. When it is down the Xfinity app shows the gateway as offline. We are on a gigabit plan and the speed is fantastic when working.

Here is a list of what we know:

  • No consistent time of day for the issue. It happens sporadically through the day
  • No consistent activity. Happens while working, on zoom calls, while streaming, etc.
  • It happens when connected to both Wi-Fi and Ethernet
  • It is recent. The first year at this townhouse there weren't as many issues. It would drop maybe once a month. Now it is multiple times a day
  • It wasn't an issue at our previous address (apartment)

This is what we have tried so far that hasn't worked or helped the issue:

  1. Switched from google nest mesh system to Xfinity gateway wifi (this helped the network come back up faster)
  2. Updated Xfinity gateway (this improved speed but still had drops)
  3. Tested working while connected via ethernet
  4. Switched to a third party modem/router
  5. Tested again using ethernet
  6. Inspected coax cable for visible damage
  7. Swapped out wall plate adapter 

Anyone experience something similar or have any other suggestions?

The Xfinity chat bot hasn't been much help and I'm assuming the next step is to request a tech visit.

What do the modem's signal stats look like ? Try getting them here; http://192.168.100.1 or here http://10.0.0.1 

Please copy all of the text in its entirety of the *Downstream Power Levels*, the *SNR's* (Signal to Noise Ratios), and the *Upstream Power Level* numbers and paste them into your next post.

OK so the upstream power is too high and it may be intermittently fluctuating even higher out of spec. That can cause random disconnects, spontaneous re-booting of the modem, speed, packet loss, latency problems, and the un-bonding of channels.

In an effort to try to obtain better connectivity / more wiggle room, check to see if there are there any excess/unneeded coax cable splitters in the line leading to the modem that can be eliminated/re-configured. Any splitters that remain should be high quality and cable rated for 5-1000 MHz, bi-directional, and no gold colored garbage from Radio Shack, Home Depot, Target, etc. Splitters should be swapped with known to be good / new ones to test.

Also check the coax cable for any damage such as cuts, nicks, abrasions, kinks, sharp bends, etc.

If there aren't any unneeded splitters that can be eliminated and if your coax wiring setup can't be reconfigured so that there is a single two-way splitter connected directly off of the drop from the street / pole with one port feeding the modem and the other port feeding the rest of the house/equipment with additional splits as needed and you've checked all the wiring and fittings for integrity and tightness and refresh them by taking them apart then check for and clean off any corrosion / oxidation on the center wire and put them back together again, then perhaps it's best to book a tech visit to investigate and correct.

@EG​ Here are the updated upstream numbers after removing a splitter, power level did go down a bit. Will report back tomorrow if there have been any more drops or not.

Please do. It's still on the high side. 40 to 45 dB is the desired range. There's not much wiggle room, but it may be OK as long as it remains to be rock-stable.

So far it has been much better. Only 1 drop vs the 5+ a day I was having.

The downstream power went up a bit to between 5-8.5.

Upstream has still been around 46-49.

I don't have any splitters in the line at all now but the cable looks pretty old. Swapping it out to a newer cable this weekend in hopes that will get the upstream down a bit more.

Quick update on this.

Replaced the coax inside my house to a single new cable from outside straight to modem. Still had issues after this and upstream numbers were unchanged. 

Tech came out yesterday (who was amazing and super helpful!) and found an issue with the underground cable. 

They ran a temp cable and scheduled a new line bury. Temp cable has been perfect so far and upstream power is stirring around 40-42.
