Fix Geolocation of my ipaddress

I would like to have the geolocation of my ipaddress changed to accurately reflect my location. I am trying to watch sports programming that is regionally restricted and solely uses the geolocation of my ipaddress. How can this be accomplished? The location of my current ipaddress is a few states away from my accurate location.

You likely recently received a new / different WAN (public) IP address assignment to your connection from their DHCP server / IP address pool, and the rDNS / geolocation data that is associated with it is now incorrect for you as it previously belonged to someone else that lived in that other area.

Comcast shuffles blocks of IP addresses around the country all the time. And after doing local plant maintenance / upgrades. ISP's don't correct this. A third-party service does. Unfortunately, this is typically a *back-burner* thing to get corrected. The only thing that you can do is to report it. You can try this;

https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-location-correction

https://support.google.com/websearch/contact/ip/

https://whatismyipaddress.com/location-feedback

http://www.ipligence.com/contact/

https://www.ip2location.com/contact/

Wait for the geolocation provider to approve your request. If your request is approved, the amount of time it takes to see the correction varies by provider. The average is two weeks to a month or more.

You can also try this;

If you are using a router that has a MAC address cloning feature, you can clone a different MAC address into it. This will force a change of your Comcast assigned WAN / public IP address. No guarantees that the new address won't also have incorrect geo-data as it may be from the same block of IP's. YMMV.

@EG Thanks for sharing this - I do know this....  in my ideal solution, Xfinity Support could help me to obtain different ip address that is more geographically correct. Hopefully an Xfinity Support person would see this and reach out and offer assistance....

Don't hold your breath... They can't change IP addresses.

@EG I realize this is an uphill slog. It would be nice if I could force a new ip address  on my router and just cycle doing this until the DNS gives me a geolocation appropriate one. I've tried to simulate this effect by using a device with a different the MAC address that's accessing the WAN so it isn't in the DNS cache but it just moved it to another distant state...

Just trying to watch my sports team....... but can't...

As I'm a noob to the forums here, not sure how to tag Xfinity Support to initiate a discussion (or direct message) if something can be done about this...

@EG Thanks for the response?  So if I understand this correctly, I will be invited at some point to direct message with an Xfinity Support person.....

Thanks again....

user_ppwt2n thank you for using the Community Forums page for assistance. As EG mentioned, there are some limitations when it comes to getting geolocations properly adjusted.

3rd Party websites can change the geolocation?  I'll pay any amount of money -- can you direct me to websites that offer this, if it's even a thing?

Scroll back up this thread to my post. I posted 5 links to those sites.

@EG Yeah, that's how to fix it...what if I just wanted a quick solution and get it changed immediately?  Would I need to explore VPN-router services?

It's gonna be a kr@pshoot with VPN's.... Ya' never know what endpoint IP address you'll get. The geolocation will likely still be incorrect.

Just a quick update: I did pursue going the route of using the various website listed in the post above on how to correct the geolocation for my ipaddr. One service, Maxmind, responded in the next day saying they verified my correct geolocation and it would be in the upcoming Tuesday Build for the database (for reference I submitted the request on a Thursday and they responded Friday morning - rather quick response)....

While I don't know the specific geolocation service the Samsung TV apps are using (lookin at you Amazon Prime Video & Yes Network) it's a start....

Yeah. In my experience, MaxMind is the best / fastest one. That's why I list it first. Good luck ! Please post back about how things turn out.

To followup, I have reached out to all of the geolocation services above and some have responded that they will update the location - others I have gotten no response.

I should note that I am just trying to watch my local sports team but am unable due to my geolocation ip address being listed as two states away - so not in the designated area for licensing. Interestingly, one would think that I could leverage "out of market" streaming opportunities - however whatever geolocation service ESPN+ uses actually knows I should be blacked out since I'm in the location of team.

The fun continues...
