Ethernet port
Hi - I just installed Xfinity and have the router and wifi working fine. I would like to hardwire my computer using the house cat5e jacks. However, when I run a cable from the back of the router to the wall jack and then from the wall jack to my computer I get no connection. I am fairly certain the wall jacks and ethernet cables are good (I changed out the cables to be sure). Is there a specific port on the back of the router I need to use?

Hello, @user_4da44e. I can certainly understand wanting to be wired directly to the router. Just to be sure, have you wired a device directly to your router bypassing the jacks?

The likely issue is that while the residence was wired with CAT5 (as most are these days), it could be:
1. The jacks were wired for phone instead of data
2. The jacks were incorrectly wired for data
3. The IDC (insulation Displacement Connector) on the back side of the wall jack didn't bite all the way into each wire to make a solid connection.
3. One jack was wired with the 568-A standard, and the other end was wired with the 568-B standard. Either standard can be used, but they must be the same on either end. This includes the jumper from the jack to the computer. Most jumpers are wired 568-B. If the jacks were wired 568-A, that is a mismatch and the result is no connectivity.
I recommend getting an ethernet tester. They are super cheap and will help you identify a wiring issue, or mismatch wiring standard issue.
