download speed significantly different between between 2 different devices connecting to the same gateway location

I have a 2 month old iPhone 13 which registers a speed around 550mbps or faster at one distance from the gateway. I have a 7-10 year old PC at the same location that connects to the same gateway with ~45 mbps. Why are these two results so different? Is it obvious that it might be due to respective ages of the equipment?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
You don't mention what plan you're on or what equipment you have, so I'll assume for now that:
 - you're on a 600mbps plan
 - you're using a relatively new comcast gateway like the XB7 or XB8

The iPhone13 is equipped with WiFi6, so I'd say that a 550 mbps speedtest would be a very good result when you account for WiFi overhead.

The PC speedtesting slower could be due to a number of possible factors, starting with 'Is it using a wired connection or WiFi?'.

If it's a wired connection:
 - what speed is it's ethernet interface rated for (10M, 100M, 1G, 2.5G)?

If it's a WiFi connection:
 - There are a LOT of Wifi versions out there (a,b,g,n,ac,ax), especially on a 7-10 yr old PC.

 - If the PC's WiFi adapter is a b or g, (definitely the most common adapter for a 10 yr old PC), then 45 mbps is about what I'd expect.

 - Different n adapters support different speeds depending on # of channels in use and channel width. (A very basic n adapter could max out around 45mbps. More advanced adapters have theoretical speeds up to 450 mbps depending on the usual WiFi performance factors like range, # of antennas, local interference, etc.)

 - ac and ax adapters should get you at least 150mbps or so, also depending on the same factors.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for bringing this up, @user_b0dece. It could absolutely be the age of the equipment along with maybe the PC processor. It could also be due to how many wireless devices are connecting to your in home network. Is the PC hardwired to the modem or are you wirelessly connecting to the internet with it?

In my network the gateway  connects to the PC via wifi. I am unable to connect directly with Ethernet due to physical limitations of the devices themselves.
