dns error

I have been experiencing intermittent lapses in internet on my macbook pro. WIFI diagnostics say "Mac is unable to resolve "www.apple.com" using the DNS settings provided by your internet service provider. Help?

@XfinityChristopher I have reset the router several times and I have run wifi diagnostics. That's about it.

Thank you for those details. And are you using an Xfinity gateway or your own?

I no longer work for Comcast.

There are a of reasons for a DNS time out.  Could be, you just didn't get a response in time from a DNS server (transient network condition).

On a Mac, a quick one is a corrupt local dns cache.  Fix it by opening up a terminal, then do:

# sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder  (El Captain and newer).

Might have a browser hijack that is redirecting your searches, or sharing private info with a 3rd party and that doesn't happen fast enough and causes a timeout -- yes, that can happen on a Mac too.  Try clearing browser cookies and web content pages.  Does it happen if you try another browser?  (firefox....anything.....) Anti-virus with a 'web shield' can also cause DNS timeouts if the communication with the anti-virus company stalls. VPN's can cause them too on a connection stall.

Could also be you just have issues with your cable service.  Take a look here, and try some troubleshooting paying attention to signal power levels and errors in the logs:

I have also had intermittent issues with Xfinity's DNS servers in general.  I don't use them.  You also can't change them to somewhere else if you use Xfinity gear now.  You can with 3rd party equipment.

Pretty tough to troubleshoot without more information. You are going to have to poke at it yourself a bit.
