DHCP issues with laptop ethernet

I've recently connected a new Arris Surfboard S33 model to my cable and activated with Xfinity. I have a Google Mesh connected to one of the modem ports for wifi and I'm using the other port for direct Ethernet to my laptop(s). The Google Mesh works fine and my wifi works fine.. but when I connect my laptop or other ethernet device to the modem directly, I cannot get a connection and my Chromebook says DHCP lookup failed in the Ethernet configuration. My Macbook Pro also does not connect when directly connecting to the Ethernet port. I swapped ports and tried with the other port/ethernet cable as well (the one that works with Google Mesh) and that also gives me the same issue.. so it's not a port/cable issue. So what could be the issue getting an IP address via DHCP on my laptops via the Arris Modem?

The S33 is a straight cable modem, not a router or a combo gateway device. Both ports can not be used for internet access. Only one public / WAN IP address gets issued to a residential connection.

Thanks EG.. in that case wouldn't the laptop be able to get an IP if I use the first port that I'm using for my Google mesh?

You need to power cycle/re-boot the modem each and every time that you change the device that is being directly connected to it so it can forget the previous device in order for the new device to be able to get an internet connection.
