Delayed Ethernet Connection

Hoping someone here can help with an issue I recently started having.

I have Xfinity's CGM4140COM gateway and the 1000 Mbps speed plan. I have my 1-year old HP deskstop, running the latest version of Windows 10, connected directly to the gateway via ethernet. About a week ago, I noticed that whenever I awaken the HP from the sleep mode, it takes 10-15 seconds for the PC to connect to the internet. Up until last week, the PC would connect almost instantaneously. I've rebooted the PC and power reset the gateway. I ran the Xfinity Speed Test just for the heck of it, and it's fine.

I'm wondering if this is more of a Windows, HP, driver or settings issue, rather than a gateway issue?

While it's not a major issue, it is kind of a pain when you're used to just hopping on the keyboard and jumping on the internet. Waiting a few seconds is not big deal, but 10-15 seconds isn't right.

Anyway, would welcome any thoughts/input out there.

To find the firmware version:

1. Login to your router at 10.0.0.1

2.  About half-way down the column on the left, click on Software

3. Software Image Name is the firmware revision

Another way to do this:

1. Go to my.xfinity.com

2. Log into your xfinity account if not already logged in

3. In the bar near the top of the page, click on the graphic for Wireless

4. Click on Connect (to the right of Overview)

5. Click on See Network

6. Click on "Gateway Online"

7.  Scroll down and click on Gateway Details

An overlay window will pop up and show you the firmware revision along with other information

Meanwhile, I see that corgi11 has 4.6p3s2.  I have 4.4p6s1 so we are not the same and it appears that corgi11's version is more recent.  Although my theory might still be correct (perhaps the problem started with my revision and the problem carried forward with corgi11's more recent version), at the moment I'm less confident about it.

Steve,

No problem at all. I will post an update here towards the end of next week regarding my experience with the XB7.

I'm experiencing this same issue with a PC directly connected to the xfinity modem.  I moved the PC connection to a switch connected to the second jack on the modem and the problem went away.  I have another PC connected via ethernet through the switch and noticed it was not having the network connection delay after coming out of sleep, so tried it with my main PC and they are both behaving correctly.  Not a fix, but at least a workaround.

My revision is also 2.2

I am using both of the ethernet ports on the gateway. My desktop has an ethernet connection to one port and my wife's desktop is connected to the second port. Both PC's are experiencing this problem.

Scott's experience with the switch being a work-around is a real puzzle.  I have no idea as to why connecting a switch would affect this in any way.

Thanks, Steve. My firmware is the same as yours. It also says Revision is 2.2.

And thanks, Scott. Of all the simple things to try, I didn't try hooking up to the second ethernet port, mostly because I have an AT&T Micro Cell wifi box connected to that port. (I have an older phone that doesn't have wifi calling and our cell signal is lousy in our house.)

Anyway, I connected the PC to the other port and there was no change. Very strange that you were able to connect to a switch connected to the other port and the problem went away. I'm stumped.

I tested this again this morning just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and am getting the same good results using a switch.  It is a TP-Link TL-SG108, a simple 8-port unmanaged switch.  When I connect my desktop PC directly to the modem and put the PC to sleep, the green link light on the modem port goes amber, and it takes 30 seconds to reconnect network when waking up the PC.  When connected through the switch it connects immediately.  The green link light on the switch stays on when the PC is in sleep mode.  The firmware on my Xfinity modem is CGM4140COM_4.4p6s1_PROD_sey.

I tried your suggestion to disconnect the switch from the modem, reconnected it, and it did take about 35 seconds again to regain network connection on the PC.  I'm in agreement that the switch is somehow keeping the connection alive for the PCs/devices connected to it.

Interesting, Scott. Just wondering: With your PC connected to the switch, and awake, what happens if you disconnect the switch from the modem and then plug it back in? Does your PC connect right away? Or does it do the 35 second delay?

Don't know anything about switches, but I'm thinking that your switch is constantly maintaining that network connection even when you put the PC to sleep, and therefore doesn't need to re-identfy the network?

Thanks,  joelbrown1.

If you haven't already, you might want to send ComcastAmira a private message. Her Dec 22 post is above. I sent her a private message on the 22nd, as did others. I received a private message reply from her on the 24th. Apparently this issue is getting some attention.

Hello Joel, welcome to our group.  I agree with g-hodgson's suggestion about contacting Amira (a Comcast employee who monitors this forum) directly. She has expressed interest in trying to facilitate a solution to the problem we are having. The more people who have this problem, the more information that Comcast will have for trying to figure out what's going on. I'm sure that checking in with Amira will be helpful.

I also received a private message back from Amira on Dec 24th in response to my message to her from a few days prior to the 24th.

I just noticed that when I power up my IPad it says no network connection on WiFi. I have to type in another web address other than the default start page to get it to connect.

I've been on the Comcast Forums for a few years now. This is one of the best troubleshooting threads I've been a part of, hands down. I've learned a few things...

Thanks all for contributing!
