Delayed Ethernet Connection

Hoping someone here can help with an issue I recently started having.

I have Xfinity's CGM4140COM gateway and the 1000 Mbps speed plan. I have my 1-year old HP deskstop, running the latest version of Windows 10, connected directly to the gateway via ethernet. About a week ago, I noticed that whenever I awaken the HP from the sleep mode, it takes 10-15 seconds for the PC to connect to the internet. Up until last week, the PC would connect almost instantaneously. I've rebooted the PC and power reset the gateway. I ran the Xfinity Speed Test just for the heck of it, and it's fine.

I'm wondering if this is more of a Windows, HP, driver or settings issue, rather than a gateway issue?

While it's not a major issue, it is kind of a pain when you're used to just hopping on the keyboard and jumping on the internet. Waiting a few seconds is not big deal, but 10-15 seconds isn't right.

Anyway, would welcome any thoughts/input out there.

Thanks for adding your voice, Steve. You communicated everything I was thinking, especially the part about getting another modem - which may work at first, then likely end up having the same problem at some point.

I'm hoping to call tech support tomorrow and point them to this thread in hopes of getting the ball rolling. I can't do it today because my wife is using the internet for work and I can't afford for them to mess up my service today!

If no Comcast rep is going to jump in here and at least acknowledge the problem we're having, opening a trouble ticket is the only way I know to get their attention. Probably would be a good idea if others placed calls too, because it would at least show that this isn't just one user having the problem.

I found another person on the Windows Ten Forum (in addition to AlphaXray who is now on this thread) who had the same issue. Comcast exchanged his modem for the 1G modem, plus upgraded him to the 1G plan. (He must have had a lesser plan, which means he probably had an older, slower modem.) So my guess is that whatever Comcast did isn't affecting just one modem model. Don't know if they gave him the Arris or Technicolor. I already have the Technicolor and it has the problem. My guess is that it's probably only a matter of time before he's back where he started. Though I hope I'm wrong...

Hello All! Thanks for reaching out to our Digital Care Team on our Forums page. We offer our deepest apologies for the delay in responding to this thread, and we definitely understand your concerns and frustrations around this delayed ethernet connection you're all running into. I checked our National Board and I am not showing this reported as a known issue. Based on the troubleshooting everyone has done so far, I would like to further look into and troubleshoot things on my end.

Anyone still having this issue, please send me a Private Message including your first and last name as it appears on the account.

One positive I will give to this newer router, is I swear my xb6 had some sort of coil wine or something.  This one is dead silent.  Really hope the issue doesn't come back.  If any of you all get a fix from amira I'd be really curious to know what it is.  Good luck!

Thanks, Alpha. Yeah this Technicolor gateway is a noisy thing. Hated it ever since I got it back in February. Best of luck to you! I'll post an update if there's something to pass along.

I don't know if this will help or not but I noticed 2 things.

If I run the network trouble shooter in windows 10 while it trying to connect it says no Valid IP address until I connect.

If I go to Whatismyipaddress.com it gives me an IPV4 address starting with a 72.X.X.X.X if I open a browser and put that address in it goes to the home page of my Comcast Gateway. Did it always do that?

In the end, I actually was able to get my hands on the XB7 gateway, and it completely solved the issue. Ethernet connection is as quick as ever at identifying the network.

Like Alpha, I am still curious about what exactly is causing the problem with the XB6 at the moment, so it would be much appreciated if someone would leave an update assuming Amira is eventually able to provide a solution.

Thanks for the update, Raipher. Will definitely send out a follow up post if Amira is able to resolve the problem. If she can't, I guess I'll see if I can get my hands on XB7. Glad you're back up to full speed.

Raipher,

If for some reason Comcast is unable to resolve this and we have to move to the XB7, could you post about your overall experiences with that unit?  Maybe wait a week or so to accumulate some experience and then let us know... I'm sure a bunch of us will be eager to know if you've encountered any glitches with the XB7. Meanwhile, I'm happy to hear that the XB7 appears to have solved this issue for you.

As a (retired) software jock, my instincts strongly suggest that the problem we're having relates to an XB6 firmware update. I don't know if an update was recently pushed by Comcast but if that has been done, then I think that update is likely the cause of this problem. And if that's the case, this should be easy to fix as long as someone has been  assigned to work on it.  I'm hoping that Amira's efforts have caused that to happen.

I cannot find a date associated with my firmware revision, which is:

COM4140COM_4.4p6s1_PROD_sey

Perhaps others who have the problem we've been discussing would like to see if they are running this firmware version?

With no specific training in programing, I tend to agree with you Steve - based upon the timing of the issue and all the troubleshooting folks have done so far.

Where can I find the firmware revision info?
