Dedicated 2.4 GHz Network

I have several smart home devices, including a thermostat, that require a dedicated 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network.

I understand that the XB8 gateway is capable of splitting the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into separate SSIDs, and Xfinity support documentation and forum responses indicate that XB8 customers can normally separate the bands by turning off band steering and assigning different network names.

However, on my gateway:

  • The settings to change this are grayed out.
  • I cannot create a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID.
  • My smart devices are having trouble connecting because they require a distinct 2.4 GHz network.

Could you please:

  1. Check whether band steering or any managed Wi‑Fi setting is enabled on my XB8 gateway?
  2. Determine why the option to separate the bands is unavailable?
  3. Confirm whether you can remotely enable separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs for my gateway?
  4. Tell me whether there is an account setting, security feature, or equipment configuration preventing me from making this change myself?

@Muhomatsu - Thank you for reaching out! I understand how frustrating it is when smart home devices like your thermostat won't connect because they require a dedicated 2.4 GHz band. Here is a breakdown of why those settings are grayed out on your XB8 and how we can get your devices connected:

Why settings are grayed out: On current Xfinity Gateways (including the XB8), xFi Advanced Band Steering is automatically enabled and enforced. When Advanced Security, xFi Pods, or managed Wi-Fi features are active on your account, manual band splitting in the admin portal (10.0.0.1) or the Xfinity app is restricted to maintain overall network performance and device roaming.

Can we remotely separate the SSIDs? We cannot permanently split your network into two distinct SSIDs from our end while xFi management features are active, as the gateway system will automatically revert them back to a unified name to keep Advanced Security and mesh features operational.

The solution for connecting 2.4 GHz smart devices: You don't actually need to split your SSIDs permanently to get your smart devices connected. You can use the Split Bands temporarily / 2.4 GHz Mode in the Xfinity app:

1. Open the Xfinity App and sign in.

2. Go to WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Troubleshoot.

3. Select Connect a device or look for the option to temporarily pause 5 GHz / force 2.4 GHz mode for 30 minutes.

4. Connect your smart devices while your phone is temporarily forced onto the 2.4 GHz band. Once paired, the devices will stay connected even after the bands merge back together under one SSID.

And please let me know if that helps!
