decreased internet speeds

Every evening from 6 to 11 PM my 800Mbps plan speeds decrease by approx 35%. Generally they vary around 500 Mbps but can go to 90 Mbps. Its an ethernet connection to an Arris g34 gateway. Downstream power levels range from 6 to 10, upstream from 36 to 39 and SNR is 38. If this is traffic related shouldn't there be an equipment upgrade ?

Hey @ppythonn this is what your results should be when in range. You can also check out the Device Connection test here for more.

DOCSIS Levels Min Max
Downstream Power Level (Receive) -13 dBmV +13 dBmV
Downstream SNR 33 dB -
Upstream Power Level (Transmit) +25 dBmV +54 dBmV
Upstream SNR 28 dB -
Upstream Receive Power -2 dBmV +2 dBmV

From what I can see except for snr my power levels are within specs. I have no upstream receive power category on my router. While these numbers are nice to know, still they do not have any effect on the ongoing issue of low speeds during certain hours. Again, outside of the above stated hours my speeds are mostly right in line with my plan speeds of 800 mbps. BUT NOT at night. WHY??

@ppythonn Thank you for your reply, and we appreciate @EG stepping in and offering their expertise as well. As our Expert mentioned, the difference in speed from day to night may be due to the amount of users online is much greater at night. If you have neighbors experiencing the same thing, we would definitely encourage them to reach out separately as you have here so that we can see if this is impacting more than just your home.

I dont know which of my neighbors have what internet services. That is not my concern. What I do know is that regularly during evening hours my speeds drop considerably. After 4 tech visits in as many months the problem remains. Xfinity didnt tell me that my service would suffer during certain hours. Obviously it is traffic related. They need an equipment upgrade if they cant handle the traffic. They shouldnt sell a product that they know they cant deliver.

FWIW. These are our in-house forum's signal spec ranges. I have found these to be the most accurate !

Specification      Min             Max
Downstream Power Level
Cable Modems -10dBmV +10dBmV
Gateways and EMTAs -7dBmV +7dBmV
Downstream Signal to Noise Ratio 35dB -
Upstream Power Level +35dBmV +50dBmV
Upstream Signal to Noise Ratio 31dB -
Upstream Receive Power -2dBmV +2dBmV

Yes. This may be being caused by a peak usage time capacity / traffic congestion problem on your local cable segment / node. If so, there is not much that you can do about it except to complain to them persistently and to get your immediate neighbors to join in. The more neighbors that complain, the more effective it will be. Good luck !
