Data Useage

Why does Xfinity think it's okay to inflate the measurement of data usage?  I track data usage on my router, where all my traffic flows to and from my entire network.

November 2025 I used 504.27GB upload+download.  Xfinity reports that as 1,229GB.  That's an inflation of 243%!

July 2025 I used 527.36GB upload+download.  Xfinity reports that as 901GB.  That's 171% more than actual.

What is going on?

I have zero trust in your measurements.

Hello there,

Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns about the significant discrepancy you've noticed between the data usage measured by your personal router and the figures reported by Xfinity. We understand that seeing such a large difference—like the 243% inflation you mentioned in November 2025—is incredibly frustrating and leads to a complete lack of trust in our system. We sincerely apologize that this is the experience you are having. We recognize that the ultimate responsibility for accurate metering lies with us, and we are committed to ensuring our customers have confidence in the numbers we provide.

We understand why you suspect an intentional inflation, but rest assured, that is not our practice.

he discrepancy often occurs because our meter (at the modem) counts all traffic, including usage from Xfinity X1 TV boxes and necessary system diagnostic traffic, which bypasses your personal router.

We own the responsibility for accurate metering. Please send us a private message with your full name and address so we can investigate your specific line immediately and resolve this discrepancy.
