Convert Phone Jack to Ethernet

We recently upgraded our xfinity account to higher bandwidth & the xf1 Gateway modem/router. The package came with CAT5e Ethernet cable. Our previous modem was hooked up to a phone Jack. I looked at upgrading our phone Jack to an Ethernet port, but the phone Jack has just 4 wires (bl,r,g,y) and only r & g we’re hooked up for phone line. The cat 5e/6 wall Jack calls for 8 wires. So the wiring doesn’t match. Is an Ethernet port needed for getting most out of new gateway modem? Is there an adapter or other process that can convert for bandwidth? Please help!

Your previous modem was DSL and connects to the internet with your phone line.  Xfinity connects to the internet with the coax cable.  No Ethernet connection required.

The gateway does have Ethernet ports on it.  You can use an Ethernet cable and connect a laptop/PC/device directly to it with the cable, instead of connecting to it with WiFi.

It's not a requirement that you use it.  Ethernet is faster than WiFi, although "speed" is more marketing than anything else.  Speed to a remote location depends on what you are talking to, the load balancing/throttling they do, and every piece of equipment between you and the location you are talking to, as well as the type of content you are viewing and how that's distributed.

Ethernet uses an 8 wire cable with twisted transmit and receive positive and negative pairs.  Flat cable for phone isn't going to work out well, even if you bought an Ethernet jack and wired the pins correctly, and it's not multi-drop (all jacks tied together).  If you want Ethernet connections in your house for other rooms, hire a contractor to pull wires through the walls for you.  They'll install a patch panel too.
