Constant lag spikes and latency variation daily

I've been having this issue for over a year now, and it seems to be getting worse. I'm experiencing severe ping spikes and latency variation making online games unplayable. This happens every single day from around 8pm onwards. I've tried different modems and different routers, and nothing seems to resolve the issue. I've also had a tech come out and check the line coming into the house and everything seemed normal. I can confidently rule out the issue being within my local network. I've chatted with customer service several times and they don't seem to know anything, all they want to do is restart the modem... I just don't know what to do anymore, something is definitely wrong and needs to be fixed.

Hello, u/dronfim. I am sorry to hear the internet issues have been so persistent and am glad to help. There is only so much remote troubleshooting we can do which is check the equipment and send out signals. After that, another Technician visit it needed to track the problem down. Any repeat visits for the same issue within 30 days are part of an automatic escalations process so we like to stay vigilant. If the issue returns after a visit, we get another one set up right away.

This link can be helpful to ensure all troubleshooting was done and was built by our Experts, Troubleshooting Tips. It shows how to check your modem signal levels to see if one of them is out of range which could be helpful in this situation.

Are you only noticing the issue while gaming or does it seem to affect all internet traffic? For you household connections, are you using WiFi, are wired to the modem, or both?

@XfinityRay Well the issue happens whether I'm gaming or not, but it is only really noticeable when I'm doing something that depends on low latency, such as online gaming, discord voice calls, or work meeting via zoom.

As for my home network, my main PC is wired via ethernet cable to my router, and it is on this computer that I notice the issue while gaming.

I've started running PingPlotter to keep a record of how bad the ping gets. Here is an example of when things are working normally, and the ping sits at around 30ms:

Then this start to get really bad, and games become essentially unplayable. The ping starts jumping around like crazy, hitting several hundred milliseconds for minutes at a time:

Hey @XfinityRay - I'm experiencing the same thing in Central NJ. I don't see an option to send a direct message and general support inquiries have been ignored/dismissed.

To piggy back on @dronfim 's post - my internet service is behaving similarly. Rough context below:

* For the most part, the internet is stable, but ping spikes will frequently occur in intervals of every 7-20s. (i.e. the average latency will be ~20-30ms, but then spike to 300-500ms, then come back down and repeat the cycle)
* I notice this mostly on VoIP or Video Chat meetings -- I work from home so this is painful for me. The issue manifests by freezing and hiccups.

* This can also be problematic when remoting into virtual machines or development environments (as the connection often drops me)
* I use a current desktop machine, plugged in directly to the router with a Cat5 cable. I don't have any additional security software, VPNs, anti-virus, or competing applications running. Confirmed current drivers, firmware, and Windows updates.
* I've tried replacing the physical cables and even replaced both the Modem and Router with newer models.
* Anecdotally, when running traces, be-98-ar03.plainfield.nj.panjde.comcast.net seems to be a problematic node with frequent high ping spikes and/or relatively higher loss %

Any information you could provide would be great, I've tried to be patient and tolerate the issue but its progressively getting worse instead of better.
