connecting new router question

Hello,  in post https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/new-router-connected-to-existingactivated-modem/680401fadaac742766081144 they said that the cable modem needs to be rebooted when we change out routers. Should the new router be powered up and ethernet plugged in when the modem is rebooted, or should the uld router be removed, the modem rebooted, then the new mpdem connected?  Thanks

That's what I thought. OK.

Power down / unplug both the modem and the router.
Disconnect the old TP-Link from the Coda56 modem.
Allow the Coda56 to sit for about a minute 60 unplugged.
Plug the Coda56 back in first and allow it to completely boot up until the indicator light(s) on it show a steady connection (lit steadily).
Connect the Banana Pi BPI-R4 to the Coda 56. Then plug it in and let it fully boot up and sync with the modem.
Connect the computer / devices / Wifi devices to the Banana Pi BPI-R4

Wow, thank you for staying with this, and for such a thorough response!

That is opposite of NoNo, who suggested powering up the router first, then the modem.

While I definitely appreciate NoNo's response, I think I will try your method.

I do know my Xfinity internet username/password and am unsure when/where to enter it; but it may not apply - it may be the modem uses that info and the router just connects to the already connected modem.

thanks again

Disconnect the old gateway completely.  Replace old router with new gateway.  Power it on and wait until it boots, then activate the new modem.  Once the new gateway has been activated, go in and set the login credentials to the ones that were on the old gateway; that way you will not have to manually rebuild your network.

@user_jdf052

For clarity. Are you using a separate cable modem and a separate stand-alone router, or are you using a combination modem / router gateway device ?

Hello EG, I'm using a separate cable modem (Hitron CODA56 Modem) and a separate stand-alone router (Banana Pi BPI-R4 openWRT). I'll be trying NoNoBadPuppy's method after 6pm cst, hopefully is all works. Thanks

Still not completely clear... You say that you are going to use the other poster's method. So, are you wanting to connect the Banana Pi BPI-R4 to the Coda56, or are you replacing both of these with a Comcast-rented combination modem / router gateway device ?

It's my pleasure ! Is the Coda 56 already activated for service ?

Yes, I did quite some time ago around the same time I did the TP link. Everything is been working well, I just want to replace the TP Link router with the BPI/OpenWRT router

Then you're all set. No need for any credentials. Please post back with how it goes.

Your methodology worked exactly as desired. I've been able to swap routers successfully as desired.

Thanks for all your help and clearly defined steps!
