Connecticut address - Boston IP - Can't see yankee games on Amazon Prime

WHY does the IP for my home internet in CONNECTICUT always show up as being in Massachusetts???  It is annoying when I try to go to websites that "show your local store" and always show me stores in MA not anywhere near where I actually am, but now we are apparently blacked out to watch Yankee games even though we are within Yankee home territory and should be allowed to see the games on Prime - but because Xfinity shows our IP address INCORRECTLY we can't see the games.  [Edited: "Language"]???

Hello, and thank you for reaching out to us here for help, jenl291! I know I'd be wondering that same thing too.  An IP address is a unique ID number given to everything connected to the internet. You’ll get one when you connect to your cable modem. This IP provides a unique identifier for each device on a local network to help transfer data to the correct place.

ou might have to manually release and renew your IP address. This may happen when you:

Have a power interruption.
Move your computer.
Get a new router.
Reconfigure your home network.

Here’s how to reset your IP address:

Windows 10/11
Press Windows and R key at the same time to open the Run box.
Type CMD and press Enter.
Type ipconfig/release in the Command Prompt window. Press the Enter key.
Type ipconfig/renew. Press Enter.

Type Exit and press Enter to close the window.

Mac OS X
Close any open internet apps (web browsers, email, etc.).
Choose the Apple icon and select System Settings.
Click Network.
Choose your mode of connection (Airport, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, etc.) in the network connection services list.
Click Details.
Select TCP/IP.
Click Renew DHCP Lease.
Open a browser and connect to the internet.

I hope this information helps!

Those steps are not likely to be helpful.

When used with a Comcast/Xfinity gateway Release/Renew would perhaps change the user's public IP if the gateway was in bridge mode. Even then, there's a good chance they'll just get the same public IP back again. When the gateway is not in bridge mode Release/Renew would perhaps change the user's local/private IP, but not the public one.

Comcast/Xfinity assigns your public IP address, but does not control where others think that IP is located. That's handled by third parties. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/fix-geolocation-of-my-ipaddress/666127b51e56d61567f91b4d?commentId=66618f1609e34b487ca2560a and https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/correct-geolocation-data may help you correct the location info.

Changing your public IP may or may not change where these third parties think you are located. If you're using your own modem and router, you can use the router's "clone MAC" feature to change your IP.

If you're using a rental Comcast device, they do not provide a way to change the IP address, and they won't change it for you, so you'd have to:

  • swap out the gateway for another, or
  • place the gateway in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace your gateway with customer-owned equipment

A VPN is another possibility. If you use one your public IP won't actually change, but systems you connect to will see the IP provided by the VPN rather than your actual public IP.
