Connect both tv box and gateway
From what I gather, if I have both a tv cable box and a router/modem, I need to use a splitter to connect each to the comcast cable. Is this the only recommended way? Thank you.

The concern is not "Home Security Devices And Equipment" help related. Topic moved here to the proper help section for assistance.

Yes. You'll need to use a two-way coax cable splitter such as this one;
https://www.amazon.com/Sv-2g-2-way-Splitter-5-1000mhz-Sv2g/dp/B003TH36CK
If you go to your local Comcast Store you can get one for free.
